Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Operating Room on a per diem basis. In this role, you will provide nursing care during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of patients' surgical experiences. You will work as a critical member of the surgical team, applying professional nursing skills and judgment to support patients' health and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Assess patients' conditions and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in treatment
- Develop individualized written care plans that include teaching needs and discharge planning
- Administer direct patient care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed
- Administer medications
- Practice infection control and maintain a clean and safe environment
- Assume responsibility and accountability for nursing care delivery to assigned patients
- Communicate changes in patient condition and care-related questions to the Charge RN or Clinician
- Develop and maintain current written plans of care; set priorities and goals with patients and families
- Provide documented evidence of patient and family teaching in the medical record
- Ensure patient education is consistent with physician orders
- Communicate and work effectively with other staff and departments
- Participate in unit or hospital-based quality assurance activities and committees
Clinical Setting
This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1. Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, and tissue, as well as accidents, injuries, and illness. You may be exposed to unpredictable emergency and crisis situations. The position may require wearing respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair.
Schedule
This is a per diem position with variable shift hours based on unit needs. Pass days are variable.
Required Qualifications
- Active license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (copy required as part of onboarding; if expiring within 90 days of start date, you will attend BLS training during orientation)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- At least one year of previous hospital acute care experience
Note: Only licensed nurse experience in acute care facilities will be counted toward RN1 experience. Acute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and relatively severe to very severe, requiring vigilant monitoring of subtle patient changes and ability to quickly recognize potential problems.
Pre-Employment Requirements
Prior to your start date, you must:
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Employee Health Services
- Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references
- Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen
- Meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings
- Provide a copy of your New York State license(s) and certificate(s)
Failure to comply with any of these requirements could result in a delayed start date or revocation of the employment offer. The hiring department will be responsible for any fees incurred for the examination.
