Registered Nurse-Surgical Step Down Unit- Full Time, Nights

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Surgical Step Down Unit on a full-time night shift basis. This 306-bed medical center on eastern Long Island provides comprehensive surgical care and recovery services for post-operative patients transitioning from intensive care. The hospital features advanced surgical capabilities including a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion, a Level 2 Trauma Center, and specialized services in cardiac care, stroke treatment, and bariatric surgery.

In this role, you will deliver professional nursing care according to physician treatment plans, ensuring patient comfort and well-being. You will work the night shift and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to meet the holistic needs of surgical step-down patients and their families.

Responsibilities

• Collect and assess patient health data by involving the patient, family, and other healthcare providers
• Perform initial and ongoing assessments based on patient presentation and department policy
• Record relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment
• Demonstrate awareness of the special needs of different age groups, cultures, and patients with disabilities
• Incorporate discharge planning into the admission process
• Analyze assessment data to identify actual or potential problems, validated with the patient, family, and healthcare providers
• Identify cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient and family dynamics related to care
• Recognize patient comfort and pain management needs that may impact the plan of care
• Identify actual or potential knowledge deficits for the patient and family
• Develop a family-centered plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes
• Collaborate with the patient, family, and appropriate healthcare providers in developing the plan of care
• Integrate identified cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of care into the plan
• Incorporate teaching and learning principles based on identified learning needs and developmental level
• Assist the patient and family in identifying and securing services to address health-related needs
• Communicate the plan of care to promote continuity of care
• Document the initial plan of care and provide updates as required
• Establish realistic goals, set appropriate priorities, and use time efficiently
• Implement the plan of care and perform appropriate patient monitoring
• Adapt nursing procedures to meet individual patient needs
• Provide education to the patient and family utilizing the educational assessment
• Recognize hazards to patient safety and take action to maintain a safe environment
• Work collaboratively with other team members to implement interventions
• Assign or delegate tasks as defined by the New York State Nurse Practice Act and according to the knowledge and skills of the caregiver
• Demonstrate knowledge regarding drug administration, incompatibilities, contraindications, and adverse effects
• Comply with medication policy and procedure for order transcription, verification, drug administration, and documentation
• Evaluate the patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes
• Document the patient's response to interventions and revisions to the plan of care
• Use ongoing assessment data to revise expected outcomes and the patient plan of care as needed
• Identify barriers to achieving desired patient and family outcomes and utilize resources to diminish negative impact
• Communicate with and include the patient, family, and other healthcare providers in the evaluation process
• Provide care that demonstrates ethical beliefs and respect for patient rights
• Demonstrate and participate in activities that support customer satisfaction
• Participate in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and support measures to improve practice
• Maintain effective interactions with staff on the unit and in other departments
• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and other healthcare providers
• Act as a facilitator when dealing with other staff members regarding issues concerning patient care or unit functioning
• Seek out and utilize the Nurse Manager or Nursing Administrative Supervisor to address issues requiring their assistance
• Accept feedback from peers and management for improved patient care and unit functioning
• Engage in performance appraisal identifying areas of strength and areas for professional development
• Work collaboratively with management to improve the environment of care for patients, families, and personnel
• Demonstrate working knowledge of principles, policies, and procedures specific to the assigned nursing service
• Maintain knowledge base through participation in departmental meetings, educational programs, professional association membership, journal review, or committee participation
• Comply with staff meeting attendance requirements
• Direct the delivery of nursing care by other members of the nursing team
• Participate in the orientation process of new employees

Required Qualifications

• Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of a two-year training at an accredited School of Nursing
• Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse
• BLS certification through the American Heart Association
• De-escalation training
• ACLS certification through the American Heart Association
• TCAR Certification
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients and their families that demonstrate recognition of cultural diversity

• Ability to clearly communicate in verbal and written format
• Analytical ability to assess and develop solutions to clinical situations or unit problems

• Ability to frequently bend, squat, kneel, climb steps or ladders, and reach above shoulders

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of ICU or step-down unit experience
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• PALS certification through the American Heart Association
• Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia (CAPA) certification
• One year of nursing experience in preoperative, perioperative, or post-anesthesia care
• Experience in patient assessment, education, and care planning for pre- and post-operative patients
• Prior experience in discharge planning and coordination of perioperative patients
• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, including documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and discharge instructions

Compensation

• Salary range: $106,916.04 to $138,356.04 annually
• Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need
• Salary range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits
