Registered Nurse-Surgical Inpatient Part Time Nights

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Registered Nurse for our Surgical Inpatient unit on a part-time night shift basis. In this role, you will provide direct patient care to surgical inpatients while embodying our Relationship Based Care model. You will work under the direction of department leadership to deliver compassionate, evidence-based nursing care that reflects our commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence.

Clinical Setting

You will work in our surgical inpatient unit during night shifts on a part-time basis. The role requires collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team including physicians, patient care technicians, and other hospital services.

Responsibilities

Patient Care and Assessment

• Perform comprehensive assessments on all assigned patients and document findings thoroughly
• Communicate promptly when changes in patient condition occur
• Identify and prioritize patient needs and nursing diagnoses
• Develop realistic, measurable patient care goals and modify the plan of care as indicated
• Evaluate and document patient responses to nursing interventions
• Take clinical leadership when a patient's condition changes and confer with the primary care physician about appropriate treatment or level of care

Care Coordination and Discharge Planning

• Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare team members when planning care
• Assess patients regarding discharge planning needs and make appropriate referrals, including palliative care when indicated
• Ensure completed discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and provide information about the patient portal and other resources

Patient Education

• Support patient, family, spiritual, and cultural needs when assessing learning needs
• Identify the patient's learning level and readiness for education
• Utilize teach-back methodology for medication education and side effects instruction
• Distribute patient education materials appropriate to clinical conditions
• Treat patients, families, and staff with respect and dignity
• Acknowledge and value the contributions of patients' significant others in the plan of care

Safety and Quality

• Demonstrate safe medication administration using bar coding technology
• Promote and protect patient health, safety, and rights
• Convey complete, timely, and accurate information during bedside shift reports and hand-offs
• Conduct hourly rounds in collaboration with patient care technicians
• Maintain a safe environment and demonstrate innovation in meeting unit-based and organizational quality metrics
• Focus on preventing pressure ulcers, falls, CAUTIs, and central line infections as appropriate to your area of practice
• Participate as a unit safety facilitator or quality initiative resource as requested
• Participate in unit huddles

Evidence-Based Practice

• Implement nursing interventions consistent with the established plan of care based on evidence-based practice
• Maintain and advance the professional image and science of nursing through use of best available evidence
• Demonstrate active involvement in clinical LADDER projects or process improvement initiatives at the unit or organizational level

Leadership and Collaboration

• Oversee and direct the work of patient care or support technicians while maintaining accountability for assigned patient care
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in leading and directing others; address conflict directly and appropriately
• Demonstrate proficiency in the charge nurse or preceptor role when assigned
• Serve as a resource and role model for new staff, students, and other system personnel
• Assist with precepting, unit orientation, and mentoring as requested
• Participate in peer evaluation processes and clinical case peer reviews
• Work collaboratively with all hospital services to accomplish daily work and maintain an environment of excellence
• Identify barriers to effective clinical practice and communicate them to nursing leadership

Resource Utilization and Technology

• Ensure appropriate level of care orders are documented in the electronic medical record for all admissions
• Adhere to proper charging of supplies
• Participate in value-based unit and organizational initiatives
• Demonstrate personal commitment to decreasing overtime utilization
• Ensure all electronic and paper documentation is complete and accurate
• Utilize guardrails for the Alaris pump
• Understand physiologic monitoring and implications for clinical management
• Utilize the bed management system
• Identify new technologies for unit, hospital, or system use
• Participate in CEOC activities for advancement and optimization of the medical record as requested

Professional Development

• Attend internal professional development offerings including Schwartz Rounds and Nursing Grand Rounds
• Obtain certification in your nursing specialty of practice
• Demonstrate accountability for professional practice competencies, ELM learning, and dress code adherence
• Participate in professional organizations through membership, leadership, or committee work
• Take assigned lunch breaks
• Adhere to the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act, the organization's Code of Ethics, and Corporate Compliance Program
• Comply with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with commitment to obtain a BSN from an accredited program within three years of first day of employment in clinical nurse role
• Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license
• Basic Life Support certification
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to collaborate with others
• Strong analytic abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• National certification in area of specialty
