The opportunity

Job Description

Murdoch Developmental Center, a regional facility serving 25 counties in central North Carolina, is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Children's Needs Assessment Clinic, one of four statewide programs at the center. This position is part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities within North Carolina State Government.

The Children's Needs Assessment Clinic provides comprehensive evaluations for children and adolescents with complex needs, intellectual and developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges, and complex medical conditions. As the RN in this clinic, you will be the primary clinical support for the assessment process, working closely with the Assessment Clinic Coordinator to manage clinic appointments, coordinate evaluations, and maintain required documentation. As time allows and during emergent situations, you will also provide support in a residential professional nurse role.

Clinical Setting

Murdoch Developmental Center is a state-operated healthcare facility providing residential services and supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex behavioral challenges, and medical conditions requiring specialized clinical care. The center employs approximately 1,600 staff and is centrally located in Butner, convenient to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the overall assessment process for children and adolescents in the clinic
  • Coordinate and manage clinic appointments
  • Provide clinical nursing support during assessments
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation related to clinic activities
  • Work collaboratively with the Assessment Clinic Coordinator
  • Provide residential professional nursing support as needed and during emergencies
  • Respond to adverse weather events and emergency situations as an essential employee

Required Qualifications

  • Active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina or a participating Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass Healthcare Provider CPR certification
  • Ability to pass Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) written and physical requirements
  • Good standing with the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and criminal background check
  • Compliance with facility tobacco and vapor product prohibition
  • Adherence to facility vaccination policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare Provider CPR certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training

Schedule

This is a full-time position with a standard schedule of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with flexibility to work 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. The position includes occasional rotating 12-hour weekend shifts from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, with schedule adjustments as needed.

Shift Premiums

The facility offers pay additions for alternative shift work:

  • First shift (6:30 AM - 3:00 PM): 10% premium for weekend-only work
  • Second shift (2:30 PM - 11:00 PM): 15% premium for weekday work, 25% for weekend work
  • Third shift (10:45 PM - 6:45 AM): 20% premium for weekday work, 30% for weekend work

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $70,000 to $85,000 annually
  • Sign-on bonus of $10,000 may be offered to successful applicants (see eligibility requirements below)

Sign-On Bonus Eligibility

To qualify for the $10,000 sign-on bonus, you must:

  • Be a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee
  • Work 30 to 40 hours per week (prorated if working less than 40 hours)
  • Not have held a position in North Carolina State government, the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months
  • Not have previously received a sign-on bonus from any state agency
  • Not have had DHHS pay any contract placement or recruitment fees

All sign-on bonuses are contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire.

  • This position is exempt from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act
  • All employees are designated as essential for adverse weather and emergency events and must report or stay over during such events
  • Tobacco products of any kind, including vapor products, are prohibited on facility campuses
  • Employees must comply with the facility's vaccination policy
  • Pre-employment drug testing and criminal background checks are required
