The opportunity

Job Description

This part-time position provides skilled professional nursing care to students in assigned schools within the Health Care District School Health Program. You will implement the medical components of an integrated school health program, serving students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Working under the clinical supervision of the Health Care District School Health Nursing Supervisor and the general supervision of the school-based Principal for non-clinical matters, you will advance student well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement through individualized nursing care.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school-based health setting, providing nursing services across multiple school locations as needed. You may be assigned to different schools based on program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first aid and injury care to students with urgent health needs
  • Conduct nursing assessments and provide counseling to students, including referrals to students and parents
  • Provide triage and treatment to students with symptoms of potential communicable disease
  • Manage students with chronic health problems, providing school-based services related to student-specific health care plans
  • Develop individualized health care plans for students with chronic health conditions using the nursing process
  • Administer medications and provide treatments to students as prescribed by a licensed health care provider with parental consent
  • Conduct state-mandated health screenings including vision, hearing, body-mass-index (BMI), and scoliosis screening, with follow-up case management and reporting
  • Initiate, develop, and maintain student health records utilizing the electronic School Health medical record system
  • Manage health room supply inventory and equipment
  • Plan and provide preventative care and well student services for the student population
  • Maintain infection control and use of personal protective equipment per School Health guidelines
  • Serve as a team member with school-based staff, professionals, students, and parents in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for ESE students and 504 plans for eligible students
  • Identify high-risk students and coordinate with school administrators and staff for school-based care and health-related support
  • Liaison with hospital-based staff for students receiving long-term hospitalization, supporting transition to hospital homebound care prior to school re-entry
  • Provide information concerning programs available for children with chronic health problems, disabling conditions, or terminal illnesses
  • Counsel parents on child-specific health needs and refer to health care providers or community agencies as needed
  • Serve as a health resource person to students, parents, guardians, foster parents, and school personnel
  • Develop and conduct group education sessions and educational messages in cooperation with school staff
  • Provide direct supervision, training, delegation, and oversight to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) providing health care services
  • Provide education and training to school staff on medication administration and chronic and life-threatening conditions
  • Monitor the school environment and campus for health and safety issues, advising administrators of potential risks in a timely manner
  • Actively participate on School-Based Teams, contributing essential nursing and medical information
  • Record compliments, grievances, complaints, and risk occurrences in the Event Reporting system
  • Maintain appropriate certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits
  • Travel to alternate school locations during scheduled work hours as needed
  • Perform emergency duties as required, including assisting community or hospital-based organizations or staffing emergency community shelters

Additional Duties

While not essential to the primary purpose of this position, you may also:

  • Function as a health consultant to school personnel
  • Provide in-services for school personnel
  • Precept and mentor newly hired registered nurses and nursing students temporarily assigned to school health rooms

Required Qualifications

  • Current State of Florida Registered Nurse license (unrestricted)
  • Associate's degree or diploma in nursing from an accredited nursing institution
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required upon hire
  • First Aid Certification from either American Red Cross or the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire (offered on-site)
  • Access to reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • One year of experience in pediatric nursing, emergency room, community health, acute care, and/or school health nursing
  • National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) certification
