Registered Nurse-School Health-Part Time

This part-time position provides skilled professional nursing care to students in assigned school settings, serving Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. You will implement the medical components of an integrated school health program, working under the clinical supervision of the Health Care District School Health Nursing Supervisor and the general supervision of the school-based Principal for non-clinical matters. The role focuses on advancing student well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement through individualized nursing care, diagnoses, and interventions in cooperation with parents or guardians.

Responsibilities

• Provide first aid and injury care to students with urgent health needs
• Manage health room supply inventory and equipment
• Plan and provide preventative care and well student services
• Conduct nursing assessments and provide counseling and referrals to students and parents
• Perform triage and treatment for students with symptoms of potential communicable disease
• Maintain infection control and use of PPE per School Health guidelines
• Manage students with chronic health problems and develop individualized health care plans using the nursing process
• Serve as a team member in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for ESE students and 504 plans for eligible students
• Initiate, develop, and maintain student health records using the electronic School Health medical record system
• Provide information about programs available for children with chronic health problems, disabling conditions, or terminal illnesses
• Liaise with hospital-based staff for students receiving long-term hospitalization to facilitate transition to hospital homebound care or re-entry into school
• Administer medications and provide treatments as prescribed by a licensed health care provider with parental consent, in accordance with established protocols and care plans
• Identify high-risk students and coordinate with school administrators and staff on school-based care and health-related support activities
• Work with School District Data Processors to identify students non-compliant with immunization and health assessment requirements
• Counsel parents on child-specific health needs and refer to health care providers or community agencies as needed
• Conduct state-mandated health screenings (vision, hearing, body-mass-index, and scoliosis) and provide follow-up case management and reporting
• Review and maintain student health records per established guidelines
• Serve as a health resource person to students, parents, guardians, foster parents, and school personnel
• Develop and conduct group education sessions and educational messages in cooperation with school staff
• Travel to alternate school locations during scheduled work hours to perform nursing services as needed
• Provide direct supervision, training, delegation, and oversight to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) providing health care services
• Provide education and training to school staff on medication administration and chronic and life-threatening conditions
• Monitor the school environment and campus for health and safety issues, advising administrators of potential risks in a timely manner
• Actively participate on School-Based Teams, contributing essential nursing and medical information
• Record compliments, grievances, complaints, and risk occurrences in the Event Reporting system
• Maintain appropriate certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits
• Perform emergency duties as required, including assisting community or hospital-based organizations or staffing emergency community shelters
• Respond to threats or disasters, man-made or natural, based on clinical experience

Education

• Associate's degree or diploma in nursing from an accredited nursing institution required
• Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• Current State of Florida Registered Nurse license (unrestricted) required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required upon hire
• First Aid Certification from either American Red Cross or the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire (offered on-site)
• National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) preferred

Experience

• No Registered Nurse experience necessary; new graduates are welcome to apply
• One year of experience in pediatric nursing, emergency room, community health, acute care, and/or school health nursing is preferred

Travel Requirements

• Travel to alternate school locations during scheduled work hours to perform nursing services as needed
• School assignments may change based on the needs of the program
