Job Description

This position provides registered nursing care to pediatric and adolescent patients ages 4-20 in a school-based health center (SBHC) setting. The RN works independently without direct on-site supervision, taking a leadership role in assessing patient and family health problems, planning and implementing nursing care, and evaluating outcomes for a designated patient population.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school-based health center providing primary care services to students in a primary school setting. This role requires understanding the functional and developmental needs of children and adolescents and the ability to work autonomously.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and document patient care activities in compliance with hospital policy and medical record standards
  • Establish parental consent prior to assessment, treatment, or procedures
  • Perform patient assessments and reassessments at appropriate intervals based on patient needs
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal clinical findings
  • Identify and document patient and family educational needs upon initial assessment and as needed
  • Screen for high-risk conditions and make appropriate referrals with documented follow-up
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing plans of care based on assessment findings and clinical judgment
  • Modify plans of care based on patient response to interventions
  • Prioritize patient care activities and appropriately coordinate or delegate aspects of care
  • Involve patients and families in developing the plan of care
  • Identify barriers to learning and provide health education based on identified needs
  • Collaborate with school nurse to review immunization records and administer immunizations as age-appropriate
  • Act as medical liaison between school, parents, and community regarding health and safety
  • Provide classroom educational presentations or facilitate speakers on preventive health topics
  • Practice Standard Precautions in all patient care activities
  • Administer over-the-counter medications as designated by parental consent form and medical director guidelines
  • Follow school board policy regarding daily medication administration
  • Maintain OTC medications to meet pharmacy requirements, including completion and submission of monthly pharmacy inspection documents
  • Adhere to medication policies, practices, and standards
  • Appropriately handle and dispose of sharps
  • Ensure patient and family rights including privacy and modesty in care provision
  • Report suspected cases of abuse or neglect
  • Comply with incident reporting and notification requirements
  • Demonstrate knowledge of unit-specific policies, procedures, and patient care equipment
  • Complete unit-specific annual competency checklist
  • Obtain necessary training prior to initial equipment use
  • Ensure equipment is in operating order prior to use and differentiate between patient complications and equipment malfunction
  • Use medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines
  • Adhere to policies and standards regarding lab testing
  • Attend hospital-wide in-services to maintain current knowledge
  • Initiate contact with Director of SBHC for training on appropriate topics

Required Qualifications

  • Current Louisiana RN license
  • Current BLS certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two to four years of pediatric nursing experience

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • 5 days per week, 8 hours per day
