Registered Nurse, RN - Operating Room

Tufts Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Operating Room to support a broad range of highly specialized surgical services including transplant, trauma, robotics, vascular, orthopedic, thoracic, ENT, neurosurgery, and cardiovascular surgery. As an integral member of the perioperative team, you will collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, residents, fellows, and perioperative staff in a fast-paced academic medical center environment.

You will care for highly acute and complex patient populations while supporting innovative surgical procedures. Operating Room nurses are empowered to practice autonomously while utilizing advanced clinical judgment, communication, and critical thinking skills to deliver safe, seamless, and exceptional patient care throughout the surgical experience.

Clinical Setting

Tufts Medical Center is a world-renowned academic medical center and the principal teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine. The Operating Room serves as a Level I Trauma Center and supports the region's leading heart transplant program, among more than 100 specialties and services.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the care needs of patients throughout the surgical experience
• Utilize theoretical and evidence-based knowledge in partnering with patients and families to provide age-appropriate care
• Assess and collaborate with patients, families, and other disciplines to identify expected outcomes and cultural needs
• Develop individualized, outcomes-based care plans incorporating patient and family readiness and learning barriers
• Implement the plan in a safe and timely manner, documenting implementation and any modifications
• Collaborate with nursing colleagues and others to implement the care plan
• Utilize evidence-based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem
• Provide and coordinate health teaching required by individuals, families, and groups
• Document all aspects of care per hospital and regulatory requirements, including treatments, procedures performed, and patient response
• Evaluate the effectiveness of planned strategies in relation to patient responses and attainment of expected outcomes
• Demonstrate and apply the skill and judgment necessary to implement nursing interventions and procedures based on critical thinking skills
• Perform procedures and treatments using nursing knowledge and judgment according to established unit guidelines and professional standards
• Safely administer medications and assess patient response utilizing knowledge of pharmacology and hospital standards of care
• Maintain clinical competency with respect to technology and utilize equipment in a safe manner
• Serve as an advocate and educator for patients and families
• Provide high-quality, efficient, and safe care utilizing data trends to support and improve clinical practice
• Participate in hospital and unit-based patient safety and quality activities
• Participate in performance improvement activities through data collection, analysis, and evaluation
• Champion quality, safety, regulatory, and patient-family satisfaction
• Facilitate cooperative and collaborative relationships among various disciplines and departments
• Support collaboration through participation in nursing, physician, and case management reporting rounds

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Certifications relevant to the department and type of care being provided (such as ACLS, PALS) may be required

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Specialty nursing certifications

Schedule

• 36 hours per week

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking
• Lifting, positioning, pushing, and transferring patients and equipment
• Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
• Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise, and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, and electric shock
• Regular exposure to the risk of bloodborne diseases and other transmissible infections

Compensation

• Base pay range: $43.01 - $98.89 per hour
