Registered Nurse (RN) OPC-Recovery (Pre-op/PACU)

Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Out Patient Recovery (OPC-Recovery) department, providing pre-operative and post-anesthesia care (PACU) nursing. This part-time position operates within a Level 2 Trauma center and serves patients undergoing procedures in gastroenterology, pulmonology, pain management, and ophthalmology.

Schedule

• Part-time, 20 hours per week
• Monday through Friday with start times varying between 6:00 AM and 9:30 AM depending on surgical schedule
• Typically 8-hour shifts on an alternating weekly schedule: 2 days one week, 3 days the next week
• Saturday call rotation (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) approximately every 6 weeks

Responsibilities

• Assess patient needs using the nursing process and develop individualized care plans in collaboration with patients and families
• Provide pre-operative holding and post-anesthesia recovery nursing care
• Anticipate and recognize significant changes in patient condition and status, adjusting the plan of care as needed
• Implement strategies to reduce patient risk and increase safety
• Assess patient and family readiness to learn and provide individualized education
• Coordinate discharge planning using an interdisciplinary approach
• Apply evidence-based practice and regulatory standards of care
• Evaluate patient, team, and unit outcomes and take appropriate action when changes are needed
• Demonstrate effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills
• Promote a culture of safety by identifying threats to patient safety and reporting safety events and near misses
• Participate in quality and process improvement initiatives
• Participate in professional development activities and complete required competencies
• Provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which you practice
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
• Completion of an accredited or approved nursing program
• Typically 1 year of experience in clinical nursing
• Proficient computer skills, electronic mail, and electronic medical records systems
• Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians
• Ability to make critical, independent decisions
• Strong organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
• Time management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize in an environment with frequent interruptions
• Coordination, collaboration, delegation, and team building skills

Preferred Qualifications

• ACLS certification (or completion during orientation period)

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently
• Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist
• Lift up to 20 lbs. over the head
• Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance
• Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force
• Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
• Use foot pedals on carts or machines
• Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with fine hand manipulation skills for IV insertion and other procedures
• Potential exposure to chemical and hazardous waste, blood and body fluids, and communicable disease; protective clothing and equipment required
