Registered Nurse RN New Graduate Medical Surgical Oncology

Banner Health is seeking New Graduate Registered Nurses for the Medical/Surgical-Oncology unit at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona. This full-time night shift position is part of Banner Health's accredited New Nurse Experience (NNE) program, designed to transition recent nursing graduates into fully competent, professional nurses through structured mentorship and comprehensive training.

Banner Desert Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma designated hospital. The Medical/Surgical-Oncology unit is a fast-paced environment where you will care for multiple types of surgical patients, including those recovering from incision and debridement, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hysterectomy, and urological surgeries. Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 RN for every 5-6 patients. You will develop a multitude of nursing skills that support long-term career growth and development.

Program Overview

The Banner Health New Nurse Experience provides a collaborative learning environment with clinical experiences, hands-on training, and professional development support. The program is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP).

Program activities include:

• Clinical experiences with a preceptor
• Training in the state-of-the-art Banner Simulation Center
• Competency and skills assessment and verification
• Orientation to the Cerner electronic medical health record system
• Patient care skills lab with hands-on equipment experience
• e-Learning modules
• Resources for professional and personal development

Banner Health offers multiple career pathways and development opportunities to support your long-term goals, whether in specialty units, leadership roles, non-bedside nursing, or other nursing sectors. The expectation is that you will remain on your NNE unit for at least 12 months to receive full and comprehensive training.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs
• Review patient history and physical with patient and family; ensure completion within appropriate timeframes
• Review diagnostics and laboratory data; report abnormal results to physicians and appropriate caregivers
• Formulate a plan of care, including discharge planning, utilizing assessment data and input from patient, family, and health team
• Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of healthcare team activities
• Provide care based on physician orders and nursing plan of care in compliance with policies, procedures, standards of care, and regulatory requirements
• Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching; revise the plan of care as needed
• Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record in a timely and accurate manner
• Provide care based on best available evidence and participate in research activities within clinical practice
• Participate in unit or facility shared leadership and support the education, role development, and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors
• Contribute to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care
• Interact with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts regarding patient healthcare

Schedule

• Full-time night shift position
• Most new nurses work three 12-hour shifts per week
• Schedule includes weekend and holiday rotations with other staff members
• You must live within a reasonable commute distance of Banner Desert Medical Center

Required Qualifications

• Recent or upcoming graduation from an accredited nursing program
• Current, valid RN license in Arizona, temporary/interim RN license, or compact RN licensure for Arizona
• Current BLS certification (through American Heart Association, Red Cross, or ASHI) or ability to obtain certification before start date
• No more than 12 months of RN experience
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently
• Adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision
• Fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects
• Ability to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating and transferring
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
• Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or by telephone
• Ability to use standard precautions due to exposure to blood and bodily fluids

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted at select locations
• Previous healthcare experience
• Bachelor's degree
• Professional certification
• Additional related education and/or experience

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, benefitted, paid position with the following compensation and benefits:

• Flat rate $3/hour weekend shift differential
• 18% night shift differential when applicable
