Registered Nurse (RN) New Graduate- Emergency Department

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is hiring a full-time third shift Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department in Charlottesville, VA. This is a new graduate position within a structured Transition to Practice Cohort beginning in early 2027. You will work three 12-hour shifts per week (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) with 16 hours of required call per 6 weeks.

The Emergency Department at Sentara Martha Jefferson is a well-supported, team-oriented environment that sees 70 to 100 patients per day. The department is centered around a patient-first mindset and quick access to skilled emergency care. The management team has built a cohesive and dedicated care team to serve the Charlottesville area.

Clinical Setting

The Emergency Department provides 24/7 emergency services with a focus on teamwork and evidence-based care. You will work alongside experienced registered nurses and preceptors who will guide your transition from academic preparation to independent professional practice.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing and patient care during your first year of practice within a growing scope of competency
• Work under the guidance of preceptors and experienced registered nurses to build clinical skills and judgment
• Complete patient assessments and contribute to individualized care plans
• Administer medications and treatments safely and escalate concerns promptly
• Participate in the nurse residency, onboarding, and competency validation program
• Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record
• Take on progressively greater autonomy and patient complexity as competencies are validated
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and communicate clearly with patients and families
• Follow safety, infection control, and DNV/CMS standards at all times
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Current state RN license required upon hire
• Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN examination required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or higher
• Entry-level experience (zero to one year of nursing experience)
• Clinical rotations completed during nursing school

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Completion of NCLEX prior to March 2027

Schedule

• Third shift: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Three 12-hour shifts per week
• 16 hours of required call per 6 weeks
• Full-time position

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay: $36.00 per hour. Additional compensation may be available, including shift differentials, on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. A sign-on bonus up to $7,500 is available for qualified candidates.
