Registered Nurse (Reg) - RN2- Operating Room

Newton-Wellesley Hospital, part of Mass General Brigham, is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN2) for the Operating Room on a 24-hour night shift. This position provides highly professional and technical nursing care to surgical patients, utilizing the nursing process to deliver direct and indirect patient care. You will oversee assigned team members and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide population-specific care in accordance with BORN regulations and professional standards.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Operating Room at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a not-for-profit facility supporting patient care, research, teaching, and community service.

Responsibilities

• Render highly professional and technical nursing care to assigned surgical patients
• Assess patients' physical, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and social needs
• Provide competent and compassionate care specific to the unique needs of individual patients
• Use the nursing process and evidence-based practice to ensure quality patient care throughout the episode of care
• Develop individualized plans of care based on assessments and in collaboration with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members
• Implement clinical and technical aspects of care and physicians' orders in compliance with standards of practice
• Evaluate patient and family responses to established goals and interventions, revising the plan of care as needed
• Demonstrate the ability to set priorities when planning and implementing patient care
• Coordinate and collaborate with appropriate resources and multidisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive discharge planning
• Recognize changes in patient's physical and mental status and inform physicians and other healthcare professionals
• Create and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, and co-workers
• Use two patient identifiers to match the correct patient with the correct care, treatment, or services
• Demonstrate principles of infection control, universal precautions, OSHA standards, and isolation procedures
• Safeguard the rights of patients and hospital personnel to privacy
• Provide patient comfort and hygiene
• Demonstrate proper use of equipment and supplies according to established procedures
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations
• Minimize risk of injury by promoting fall precautions and other safety practices
• Treat patients and families in a non-judgmental, respectful manner
• Advocate for patients
• Provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families
• Participate in performance improvement activities
• Control patient care costs through efficient management of supplies and services
• Ensure complete, accurate, and timely written communication of patient information
• Complete all parts of the documentation system per hospital and unit policies
• Provide safe, accurate, and timely medication and IV administration
• Consistently use the "5 rights" when administering medication
• Demonstrate knowledge of drug action and appropriate nursing interventions for adverse drug reactions
• Verify and analyze appropriateness of medication and IV fluid orders
• Ensure correct infusion rates when administering medications using infusion pumps
• Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive educational plans
• Assess the need for patient and family education
• Formulate and implement educational plans based on assessed needs
• Document education in the patient record
• Evaluate outcomes of education plans and modify instruction based on evaluation
• Take personal responsibility for own performance and professional growth
• Initiate and facilitate changes to improve quality of nursing care on the unit
• Accept responsibility and be accountable for care given to assigned patients
• Work well with co-workers and collaborate with other members of the healthcare team
• Accept and learn from constructive criticism
• Maintain clinical competence, mandatory training, and regulatory requirements
• Perform duties of charge nurse as needed
• Act as a resource and professional role model for peers and students
• Assist in orientation and ongoing support of new staff
• Advocate for patients by escalating care concerns up the chain of command
• Manage urgent and emergent situations effectively
• Communicate effectively and promote a cooperative working environment
• Address conflicts with appropriate personnel using listening skills and sensitivity
• Communicate expectations to assigned team members with tact and in a clear, concise, and thorough manner
• Solve problems effectively
• Ensure critical patient information and data are communicated across the continuum of care
• Support and promote management decisions, goals, and initiatives

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) state license
• Two years of Operating Room experience
• Demonstrated clinical competence as required by the specialty area

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a Peri-operative Nursing Program
• AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) certification

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
• Nursing education (Associate or Bachelor's degree) required

Schedule and Shift

• 24-hour night shift
• 24 scheduled weekly hours
• Regular, full-time employment

Work Environment

You will work in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes, and radiation. Caring for patients involves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements. Other duties may include general cleaning with exposure to dirt, odors, and cramped quarters.
