Houston Methodist is seeking a Registered Nurse PRN for Medical/Surgical nursing. This position provides direct patient care to a diverse patient population with varied and complex needs on a day shift basis. You will conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, provide patient education, and maintain medical records while functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of clinical practice.
As an RN PRN Med/Surg, you will communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care. You will demonstrate clinical competence in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies. You will act as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and assist with patient exams and treatment
- Develop, update, and communicate plans of care in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team
- Provide patient teaching based on learning needs and evaluate comprehension, adapting methods as needed
- Administer medications, perform procedures, and manage emergencies using clinical judgment and evidence-based practice
- Advocate on behalf of patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns
- Participate in or lead unit and shared governance initiatives
- Serve as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees as appropriate
- Contribute to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management
- Identify areas for practice improvement using research-based evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes
- Report near misses and collaborate with the interprofessional team to improve quality and safety scores
- Manage time effectively to minimize incidental overtime and prioritize daily tasks
- Contribute to meeting department financial targets through decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential
- Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment
- Active RN license from Texas Board of Nursing or PSV Compact Licensure (permanent Texas license must be obtained within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) or Instructor certification from the American Heart Association
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential job functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills with ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Ability to function independently and exercise clinical judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients and families
- Critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Proficient time management skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a manner consistent with customer service focus
Preferred Qualifications
- Magnet certification from ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center)
Schedule and Work Requirements
- Day shift position
- PRN (as-needed) employment status
- On-call availability may be required during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events
- May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area
- Scrubs required as work attire
- Non-exempt employment status
