Deerfield Correctional Center seeks a Registered Nurse (PRN) to provide nursing care within an adult correctional institution. This is a flexible staffing arrangement with no more than 29 hours per week, offering a temporary enhanced hourly rate of $47.00/hour due to critical staffing needs. This wage position is limited to 1,500 hours per 12-month period (May 1 – April 30) and offers no state benefits.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a correctional healthcare environment providing 24-hour nursing care to incarcerated adults. The facility utilizes telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings and triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care.
Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per standards of practice
- Deliver 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine support, chronic care clinic services, sick call screenings and triage
- Administer medications and provide patient education
- Provide basic life support and emergency care
- Document all pertinent information into health records while maintaining confidentiality
- Interface with other departments as needed
- Delegate tasks and workload as appropriate
- Work assigned hours, days, and locations as determined by facility needs
- Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional requirements
- Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education and certification with a focus on correctional nursing
- Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs
Required Qualifications
- Valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the Board of Nursing or multi-state compact license
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire
- Recent graduates of Virginia nursing programs not yet licensed must have the NCLEX-RN exam scheduled at the time of application
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a corrections or law enforcement environment
- Experience working with mental health patients
- Experience in acute care and/or community health settings
Schedule and Employment Terms
- PRN (as-needed) flexible staffing arrangement
- No more than 29 hours per week on average
- Limited to 1,500 hours during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30
- Wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year
- No state benefits offered
- Enhanced hourly rate in effect only while facility experiences critical staffing shortages
