Registered Nurse - (PRN) Days

This is a PRN (as-needed) day shift position for a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department. You will deliver comprehensive emergency nursing care to patients across all age groups, from neonates through geriatric patients, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. Working under the direction of the emergency physician, you will provide direct patient care, perform emergency stabilization, manage time-sensitive conditions, and coordinate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a hospital emergency department providing acute care to patients presenting with a wide range of emergency conditions. The environment is fast-paced and requires the ability to manage multiple patients simultaneously while maintaining focus on individual patient needs.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments using standardized acuity tools such as the Emergency Severity Index (ESI)
• Administer medications and monitor patients for reactions or side effects
• Record and monitor vital signs, symptoms, and changes in patient condition
• Perform triage and initial stabilization of patients until the attending physician is available
• Manage basic life support needs and coordinate stabilization and transfer of patients requiring higher levels of care
• Provide IV therapy, perform 12-lead EKGs, venipuncture, IV initiation, blood draws, and cardiac and pulse oximeter monitoring
• Apply oxygen using appropriate delivery systems and administer nebulized treatments
• Monitor patients receiving moderate or procedural sedation and report patient condition and response to the emergency physician
• Assist the emergency physician during exams, procedures, diagnostic testing, and treatments
• Recognize and participate in initial management of time-sensitive emergencies including STEMI, stroke, sepsis, and trauma
• Support on-site diagnostic imaging by preparing and monitoring patients for X-ray, CT, and ultrasound, including monitoring for contrast media reactions
• Perform venous blood draws and point-of-care laboratory testing as ordered by the physician
• Report abnormal lab results to the healthcare provider without delay
• Initiate patient education and discharge planning; review discharge instructions and verify patient stability prior to discharge
• Maintain accurate, detailed medical records and chart documentation in accordance with facility policy
• Account for narcotic inventory at shift changes and maintain pharmacy security
• Log medication inventory and removal as required by pharmacy policy
• Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans
• Report safety violations, work injuries, work hazards, and suspected abuse to appropriate personnel and agencies
• Maintain all clinical proficiencies and complete annual training as required by facility policy
• Perform quality assurance chart reviews as designated by administration
• Ensure the emergency department operates in compliance with federal, state, and accrediting agency standards
• Comply with Infection Control and Prevention Plan guidelines and CDC requirements
• Assist with maintaining appropriate supply levels and medical equipment

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Current registered nursing license in good standing with the Texas State licensing board
• Minimum of three years of Emergency Room nursing experience
• Current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR certification
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply clinical orders, protocols, and policies
• Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and the care team using structured hand-off communication (e.g., SBAR) and report to EMS and receiving facilities
• Ability to accurately perform medication dosage calculations, weight-based pediatric dosing, IV drip and infusion rate calculations, and clinical unit conversions
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Computer literacy and ability to utilize electronic record keeping programs
• Ability to stand and walk for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hours at a time
• Ability to bend, lean, stoop, and maintain full range of body motion without hindrance
• Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and reach; sit, climb, or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• Ability to talk and hear
• Ability to frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Preferred Qualifications

• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
• Crisis-prevention or de-escalation training (e.g., CPI)

Schedule and Employment Terms

This is a PRN (as-needed) position with day shifts. The position is subject to require overtime and may include extended hours during the week, weekends, and holidays, and during periods in which a state of emergency has been declared. You may be required to travel at the discretion of the Governing Board and may be required to drive personal or company-provided vehicles or travel by airplane as needed.

Work Environment

You will frequently be exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. You may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation. You may be exposed to various contagious diseases or conditions that have the potential of being physically, emotionally, and/or psychologically harmful. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
