Registered Nurse, Pre-Op/Post-Op/Operating Room - PRN - NO Weekends or Late Nights!

The Eye Institute of West Florida Surgery Center, part of EyeCare Partners, is seeking a Registered Nurse for Pre-Op, Post-Op, and Operating Room duties on a PRN basis. This position does not require weekend or late night shifts. You will work in an ambulatory surgery center providing ophthalmic surgical care, typically working 1-4 days per week, usually on Tuesdays plus Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and/or Friday as needed.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a surgical center environment providing care to patients undergoing eye care procedures. The facility operates Monday through Friday, 7am-5pm, with occasional flexibility for earlier or later start times as needed. Travel to the Largo office location may be required, with mileage reimbursement provided.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document nursing care of patients in accordance with Federal, State, and accreditation standards and ASC policies and procedures
• Supervise and direct patient care in the operating room
• Ensure proper techniques and practices are used in accordance with accepted standards of practice
• Comply with HIPAA regulations and maintain knowledge of patient rights
• Supervise other personnel in the room and direct or assist as necessary
• Immediately report unusual occurrences to charge personnel and document appropriately in the patient record
• Demonstrate primary nursing accountability through coordination, communication, and continuity of patient care
• Maintain medical records in an accurate and legible manner
• Participate in continuing education, in-service training, staff meetings, and quality assurance programs
• Follow physician orders and directions from management
• Actively participate in developing a healthy work environment
• Assist in training new staff when needed
• Balance team and individual responsibilities
• Work appropriately with other departments

Circulator Role Responsibilities

• Perform scrub duties as necessary
• Maintain count on sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure no loss of items according to policy
• Perform all circulating duties with efficiency
• Supervise and assist the Scrub Nurse as needed
• Position patient, prepare operative area, and adjust table to proper position according to standard policies
• Ensure all supplies and equipment are in the room and provide to team as needed
• Open all sterile packs and supplies according to aseptic technique
• Assist surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other personnel as needed
• Observe patient for changes in condition
• Review surgeon's preference cards for desired medications and verify with surgeon
• Ensure all medications are administered and charted according to established policies and procedures
• Identify and record patient's response to medication when necessary
• Care for specimens and cultures as directed by set policies and procedures
• Accompany patient to PACU and give report to Post-Op Nurse
• Assist in control and maintenance of supplies and equipment
• Record use of equipment as directed
• Check rooms, material, and equipment for proper care and handling
• Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and aseptic techniques
• Assist in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license required in the state where the worksite is located
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• At least 6 months of OR experience (scrubbing and/or circulating)
• Favorable result on background check
• Ability to assess, prioritize, plan, and implement patient care in an effective manner
• Ability to respond to emergent situations
• Demonstrates a positive, friendly, courteous, and professional manner
• Maintains effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and other staff
• Able to work within a team
• Good communication skills: oral and written
• Ability to be organized, manage time effectively, and work in a cost-effective manner
• Ability to work independently and within a group
• Arrives to work area on time with minimal absences and observes assigned work schedules and hours

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in nursing
• Adult Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Knowledge of Amkai Office and Amkai Charts Database software

Technology and Systems

• Knowledge of patient monitoring and emergency equipment
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
• Familiarity with printer, copier, telephone, and fax systems

Physical Requirements

This role requires a variety of physical activities to effectively perform essential job functions. The position involves frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25-50%). You must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs. Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology. Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus—is required 100% of the time. Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
