This is a part-time Registered Nurse position in a correctional facility healthcare setting, working 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM every other weekend. You will provide direct nursing care to the incarcerated patient population, including assessment, treatment planning, medication administration, and patient education within a correctional institutional environment.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a correctional facility healthcare department, delivering medical and behavioral health services. The role may require you to cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities and may include backup responsibilities to the Health Services Administrator or Site Manager.
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients in a timely and accurate manner
- Contact practitioners to obtain medical orders
- Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and other tasks as ordered
- Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate
- Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other diagnostic tests
- Conduct triage officer intake screenings for necessity and priority at sick call
- Collect and record data for statistical reporting on Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives
- Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated
- Report reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in patients' emotional or physical condition
- Provide patient education on correctional facility policies and discharge planning
- Record care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner using appropriate formats and forms
- Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment as directed by practitioners
- Maintain aseptic techniques and infection control precautions
- Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose management
- Maintain working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition
- Maintain working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences as applied to correctional settings
- Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to your supervisor
- Notify supervisor of medical or security incidents
- Participate in in-service education sessions
- Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required
- Oversee and delegate duties as expected and allowed under RN scope of practice
- Train new hires and coworkers as requested
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Active nursing license in the state where services are provided, in good standing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training
- Excellent documentation skills
- Knowledge of RN scope of practice
Schedule
- Part-time position
- 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
- Every other weekend
- May be directed to cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities
