Registered Nurse Operating Room Part Time

Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking a Part-Time Registered Nurse for the Operating Room. This position is based at our 674-bed main campus facility in Miami-Dade County, where you will provide perioperative nursing care to surgical patients in a fast-paced, technology-advanced clinical environment.

Clinical Setting

Mount Sinai Medical Center is South Florida's largest private independent not-for-profit hospital, operating 12 facilities across Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties with 38 medical services including cancer care, emergency care, orthopedics, and cardiovascular care.

Responsibilities

Assessment and Preparation

• Prepare the OR suite to receive new admissions
• Greet patients upon arrival and initiate hemodynamic monitoring
• Perform initial vital signs and admission history with introduction to patient and family
• Notify physician of chief complaint within 15 minutes of arrival to procedure area
• Obtain and document a complete nursing admission assessment, including physiological and psychological factors, within eight hours of admission
• Perform and document an accurate systems assessment at the beginning of each procedure
• Assess patient education needs and psychosocial needs specific to patient's age, growth, and development

Intraoperative Care

• Evaluate, assess, and document patient's surgical status
• Report abnormal findings to physician and document pre- and post-operative counts
• Assist anesthesia in maintaining intake and output
• Check availability of blood products and verify blood products with anesthesia before administering
• Document blood administration and assure accuracy
• Monitor, evaluate, and intervene appropriately with patients receiving conscious sedation
• Demonstrate appropriate safety measures related to potential radiation exposure
• Demonstrate competence in application of safety positioning devices with ongoing observation, intervention, and documentation per hospital policy
• Maintain thorough knowledge of operation, care, and handling of OR equipment
• Demonstrate ability to perform new procedures, skills, and routines in specialty areas

Patient Care Implementation

• Safely and correctly initiate and document nursing interventions in emergency situations
• Perform 24-hour chart check at the beginning of each procedure
• Prepare intravenous solutions using aseptic technique
• Administer, observe, and document intravenous therapy according to hospital policy
• Administer medications within 30 minutes of scheduled time, observe and document effectiveness, and recognize and report adverse reactions immediately
• Provide individualized instructions to patient and significant other regarding the plan of care
• Demonstrate safe and correct use of unit-specific equipment
• Ensure each patient's general hygiene needs are met
• Perform pre-operative and post-operative care and instruction for each assigned surgical patient during shift
• Adhere to standard precautions including hand hygiene guidelines at all times
• Document specific patient valuables on designated form when received and arrange for appropriate storage
• Perform dressing changes using aseptic technique
• Collect and label specimens per policy when ordered by physician
• Perform bedside glucose monitoring according to policy
• Report all abnormal findings immediately to physician
• Initiate wound and skin protocol upon identification of risk
• Perform ostomy care including irrigation, appliance usage, and reinforcement of teaching
• Insert intermittent or indwelling urinary catheter using aseptic technique
• Administer oxygen therapy according to physician order
• Transfer patients in and out of the unit efficiently by obtaining complete and correct physician transfer orders, completing and documenting transfer summary, and ensuring appropriate completed referral forms accompany intra-facility transfers
• Demonstrate safe and correct use of restraints

Evaluation and Documentation

• Document and report patient responses or outcomes resulting from nursing interventions, treatments, procedures, interpersonal interactions, and patient and family education
• Evaluate and document patient's progress towards established goals and objectives
• Update and revise patient care problem list and individualized patient care standards based on patient and family responses, progress towards goals, and changes in medical status

Professional Development and Leadership

• Obtain 100% mandatory hospital and unit-specific inservices annually prior to evaluation date
• Plan, present, and document unit inservice as required by level
• Document competency in clinical skills annually
• Attend staff meetings as required
• Use established lines of communication for resolution of problems and interpersonal conflict
• Present a minimum of 2 in-services and 2 patient conferences
• Attend 75% of staff meetings
• Serve as a preceptor and clinical resource
• Function as a Charge Nurse and assist in applying financial management principles including staffing, scheduling, decreasing length of stay, triaging, and supply management
• Chair or co-chair unit-based performance improvement committee meetings
• Participate in clinical competency compliance of staff
• Handle difficult situations and conflict in a timely manner

Required Qualifications

• Current RN licensure in the state of Florida
• BLS certification
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
• Minimum 2 years of experience in operating room nursing

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) certification
