The opportunity

Job Description

Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for the Operating Room. This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-quality clinical environment within South Florida's largest private independent not-for-profit hospital system. You will provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care, including pre-operative assessment, intraoperative support, and post-operative monitoring across our 12 facilities.

Clinical Setting

Mount Sinai Medical Center operates 12 facilities across Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, including a 674-bed main campus. The operating room serves patients requiring surgical intervention across 38 medical services, including cancer care, orthopedics, cardiovascular care, and emergency services.

Schedule

This position is scheduled for 5x8 shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room suite to receive new admissions and greet patients upon arrival
  • Initiate hemodynamic monitoring and perform initial vital signs and admission history
  • Evaluate, assess, and document the patient's surgical status, reporting abnormal findings to the physician
  • Perform and document accurate systems assessment at the beginning of each procedure
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of operating room equipment operation, care, and handling
  • Demonstrate competency in performing new procedures, skills, and routines in specialty areas
  • Assist anesthesia in maintaining intake and output records
  • Check availability of blood products and verify blood administration with anesthesia before administering
  • Document blood administration and ensure accuracy
  • Monitor, evaluate, and intervene appropriately with patients receiving conscious sedation
  • Apply safety positioning devices and provide ongoing observation, intervention, and documentation per hospital policy
  • Demonstrate appropriate safety measures related to potential radiation exposure
  • Handle difficult situations and conflict in a timely manner
  • Obtain and document a complete nursing admission assessment, including physiological and psychological factors
  • Develop a plan of care within eight hours of admission
  • Establish priorities for patient care based on patient needs
  • Safely and correctly initiate and document nursing interventions in emergency situations
  • Perform 24-hour chart check at the beginning of each procedure
  • Prepare intravenous solutions using aseptic technique
  • Administer, observe, and document intravenous therapy according to hospital policy
  • Administer medications within 30 minutes of scheduled time and observe and document effectiveness
  • Recognize and report adverse reactions immediately
  • Provide individualized instructions to patients and significant others regarding the plan of care
  • Ensure safe and correct use of unit-specific equipment
  • Meet each patient's general hygiene needs
  • Perform pre-operative and post-operative care and instruction for each assigned surgical patient during shift
  • Adhere to standard precautions including hand hygiene guidelines at all times
  • Document patient valuables on designated forms and arrange for appropriate storage
  • Perform dressing changes using aseptic technique
  • Collect and label specimens per policy when ordered by physician
  • Perform bedside glucose monitoring according to policy
  • Report all abnormal findings immediately to physician
  • Initiate wound and skin protocol upon identification of risk
  • Perform ostomy care including irrigation and appliance usage
  • Insert intermittent or indwelling urinary catheters using aseptic technique
  • Administer oxygen therapy according to physician order
  • Transfer patients in and out of the unit efficiently with complete and correct physician transfer orders
  • Complete and document transfer summaries
  • Ensure appropriate completed referral forms accompany intra-facility transfers
  • Demonstrate safe and correct use of restraints
  • Document and report patient responses and outcomes resulting from nursing interventions, treatments, procedures, and patient/family education
  • Evaluate and document patient progress toward established goals and objectives
  • Update and revise patient care problem list based on patient and family responses

Professional Development and Leadership

  • Obtain 100% mandatory hospital and unit-specific inservices annually prior to evaluation date
  • Plan, present, and document unit inservice as required by level
  • Document competency in clinical skills annually
  • Attend staff meetings as required
  • Use established lines of communication for resolution of problems and interpersonal conflict
  • Present a minimum of 2 in-services and 2 patient conferences
  • Attend 75% of staff meetings
  • Serve as a preceptor and clinical resource
  • Function as a Charge Nurse and assist in applying financial management principles including staffing, scheduling, decreasing length of stay, triaging, and supply management
  • Chair or co-chair unit-based performance improvement committee meetings
  • Participate in clinical competency compliance of staff

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Florida
  • BLS certification
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the operating room specialty
