Registered Nurse New Graduate Spring 2027 Cohort St James Hospital

St. James Hospital is recruiting Registered Nurses for its Nurse Residency Program, a structured training program designed for new graduate RNs to transition from academic learning to confident clinical practice. This is a full-time position (36 hours per week) on the night shift at St. James Hospital in Butte, Montana, the largest hospital in Southwestern Montana with 98 beds, a Level III Trauma Center, and a Level II NICU.

As a Registered Nurse, you will assume responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. You will utilize the nursing process through technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice, and coordination with other health team members.

Clinical Setting

New graduate RNs will work in one of the following areas:

• Medical/Surgical Telemetry
• Medical/Surgical Pediatrics

Responsibilities

• Assess, recognize, and address patients' psychological and physical needs
• Foster quality of care with the best interests of patients and their families in mind
• Communicate compassionately and effectively with patients, families, and care team members
• Assist in developing individualized treatment plans
• Comply with evaluation, treatment, and documentation guidelines
• Oversee care delivered by LPNs and/or CNAs
• Participate in clinical team conferences
• Follow hospital, regulatory, and professional guidelines, policies, and procedures

Nurse Residency Program

This program is designed for new graduate RNs with less than one year of RN experience. Participants receive:

• Paid clinical training hours
• Interactive webinars and simulations
• Case-based learning experiences
• Weekly in-person sessions (transitioning to monthly after 6 months)
• Dedicated support from experienced nurse mentors

Cohort and Timeline

• Cohort Start Date: February 1, 2027
• Manager Interviews: Begin immediately as qualified applications are received
• Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; early submission is encouraged

Required Qualifications

• BSN degree from an accredited program required within 4 years of hire (unless 15 years of acute care service). Nurses hired on or before September 1, 2014 with only an ASN/ADN are exempt. Nurses hired between September 2, 2014 and April 15, 2019 have 5 years from date of hire to obtain a BSN.
• Current State of Montana Registered Nurse License
• BLS Certification upon hire
• ACLS required within 9 months of hire for all ICU/ED RNs
• PALS required within 9 months of hire/transfer for all RNs working in ICU/ED/5th Main
• TNCC within 12 months of transfer or hire for all ICU/ED RNs; must maintain TNCC/ATCN or equivalent recognized by the American College of Surgeons
• Oncology RN certification (OCN) or 12 credits of cancer-related education per year for Oncology RNs
• Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to achieve patient-focused outcomes
• Ability to read, interpret, and write professional documents and reports
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations including rate, ratio, and percent
• Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
• Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled shifts is required
• Ability to see and read information, labels, and assess patient needs; operate monitors; identify equipment and supplies
• Frequent verbal communication with patient care providers, patients, and visitors; ability to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision; frequent computer use and typing for documentation
• Ability to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients; bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment of varying weights, up to and including heavy items
• Ability to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients; push/pull gurneys and portable equipment; navigate crowded and busy rooms
• May be required to stand in a stationary position for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

• National Certification in area of practice

Schedule and Compensation

• Status: Full-Time, 36 hours per week

• Starting Pay: $33.38 per hour
• Hourly Range: $32.73 - $78.17 (actual rate dependent upon experience)
