The opportunity

Job Description

Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia is hiring newly graduated Registered Nurses for a comprehensive Nurse Residency Program designed to support your transition from nursing school to professional practice. This fast-track application is open to all new graduate RNs with less than 12 months of experience across all shifts and units currently placing new graduate nurses.

Program Overview

Sentara's Nurse Residency Program provides newly hired graduate nurses with structured support and hands-on experience. There is no separate application or application deadline—all newly hired graduate nurses are automatically enrolled. The program is available at all 12 Sentara hospitals.

After completing your orientation, you will begin your residency immediately. The program includes 6 months of hands-on experience alongside trained preceptors across six clinical areas: Medical-Surgical, Intermediate Care, Critical Care, Emergency, Operating Room, and Women's Health. You will also receive instruction in career pathing, professional development, leadership, self-care, and stress management.

Clinical Setting

Sentara Leigh Hospital is a 525-bed tertiary care facility in Norfolk, Virginia. The hospital is home to the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and burn trauma unit in Hampton Roads and serves as the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School. The facility includes a recognized accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and is designated a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence. Specialties include heart and vascular, neurosciences, neurosurgery, urology, oncology, spine care, advanced imaging, behavioral health, maternity, and women's health, including a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited RN program
  • Current Virginia RN license or eligibility to obtain one
  • Graduating soon or graduated with less than one year of RN practice experience

Compensation

The base pay range for full-time employment is $36.00 per hour. Additional compensation may be available, including shift differentials, on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. All new-to-practice RNs receive a sign-on bonus. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs.
