Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery - Central Staffing Office

Parkland is seeking a Registered Nurse for Labor & Delivery to provide comprehensive care to patients throughout the labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum periods. This is a PRN (as-needed) position working 12-hour night shifts at the Parkland facility, 1st Floor, Block 600.

You will care for laboring patients, support vaginal and cesarean deliveries, provide immediate postpartum care, and support stable neonates and patients in the recovery and extended care unit. You will perform continuous patient assessments, recognize changes in patient condition, implement appropriate interventions, and exercise independent judgment in providing safe nursing care. You will also support breastfeeding education and provide emergency resuscitation care as needed.

Clinical Setting

This role is based in the Labor & Delivery unit at Parkland's main facility. You will work with an interdisciplinary team to provide patient-centered care in accordance with established protocols and the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care to assigned populations in accordance with established protocols and multidisciplinary plans of care
• Perform continuous assessment and surveillance of laboring patients, recognizing changes in condition and providing appropriate interventions
• Support patients through labor, vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery, and the immediate postpartum period
• Provide safe medication administration using the patient's six rights, maintain and manage IV access, perform point-of-care monitoring, and demonstrate safe infection control practices
• Support appropriate positioning, pain assessment and management, and emergency resuscitation care for both patients and neonates
• Provide patient and family education related to labor, delivery, newborn care, and breastfeeding
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in patient care records and hospital documents
• Consult with other team members as required and notify providers of changes in patient condition
• Serve as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural and religious preferences
• Provide direction to non-nursing staff and serve as a preceptor to newer nursing staff as needed
• Maintain current knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies, equipment, and procedures for patients requiring induction of pregnancy
• Stay current with developments and advancements in nursing practice through seminars, workshops, professional journals, and professional organizations
• Pass the hospital's Medication Examination prior to orientation
• Identify ways to improve work processes and patient satisfaction, making recommendations to supervisors as appropriate

Required Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
• Current RN license with the Texas Board of Nursing or valid temporary permit, or valid Compact RN license
• Current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network
• Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network, required upon hire or placement in role
• One of the following upon hire or transition into the role: AWHONN Intermediate Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, AWHONN Advanced Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, or National Corporation Certification (NCC) Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification
• Two years of Labor & Delivery experience, OR successful completion of Parkland's Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse Residency Program or Fellowship Program plus one year of Labor & Delivery experience
• Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures
• Ability to communicate effectively via the overhead paging system
• Ability to demonstrate patient-centered and patient-valued behaviors
• Ability to provide direction to non-nursing staff and serve as a preceptor
• Acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty care areas

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Licenses and Certifications

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification must be renewed every two years (AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced) or every three years (National Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification)
• Maintain current State of Texas RN licensure and any additional required licensures or certifications

Schedule and Employment Terms

• PRN (as-needed) position with 12-hour night shifts
• Minimum of two shifts per pay period when the hospital has need
• Shifts may include weekends and major and minor holidays
• Major holidays: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day
• Minor holidays: Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July
• Weekends defined as 3:00 PM Friday to 7:00 AM Monday
• Required to float to areas within skillset as needed and maintain competency
• Must accept assignments given by the hospital, including on-call assignments
• Must have two years of prior work experience in Labor & Delivery specialty area and two years overall nursing experience to participate in the RN PRN program
• Regular relief status with no benefit eligibility
• Not eligible for pay increases with evaluations
• Hospital does not guarantee any work or minimum number of hours per week
• Employees not meeting scheduling requirements will be performance managed and encouraged to seek roles for which they can meet the requirements
