REGISTERED NURSE- LABOR & DELIVERY (12 hours/week- 5p-5a)

Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee, Illinois is seeking a skilled Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to join our acute care team. You will provide comprehensive nursing care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast-paced and supportive environment, working closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and positive childbirth experiences. This position requires flexibility with assignments within your professional scope, duties, and licensure.

Schedule

• 12 hours per week
• 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM shift

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to women before, during, and after labor, including monitoring maternal and fetal vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with epidurals
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients
• Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families throughout the labor process
• Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices and respond to any abnormalities or emergencies as necessary
• Assist in all aspects of labor, including preparing patients for delivery, guiding mothers through labor, and coaching during pushing
• Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections, including prepping the delivery room and ensuring sterile environments
• Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring as needed
• Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including administering medications, monitoring recovery, and facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support
• Educate patients and families about postpartum care, newborn care, and discharge instructions
• Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with quick thinking and effective interventions
• Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as necessary
• Maintain annual education requirements
• Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education opportunities
• Assist with maintaining cleanliness and inventory in the labor and delivery unit
• Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing students or newly hired RNs as needed

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Active RN license in the state of Illinois
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
• New Graduate RNs starting on or after January 1, 2025 must earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of experience as an RN in Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, or Women's Health
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Compensation

• Base compensation: $34.52 to $45.34 per hour
• Compensation within the pay range based on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, and training
• Premium pay including shift differential and on-call compensation

• Frequent standing (40% of workday) and walking (25% of workday)

• Carrying equipment and supplies up to 150 feet at waist height

• Occasional repetitive use of feet for operating bed controls and positioning equipment

Sensory Requirements

• Speech required to communicate with patients, families, and physicians
• Vision needed to perform patient assessments, administer medications, and use computer terminals
• Hearing needed to hear patient call lights, calls for help, patient concerns, and alarms
• Touch needed to perform assessments and comfort patients
• Smell helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood, and electrical or fire safety hazards

Work Environment

• Indoor work environment with normal temperature range and average lighting and noise levels
• Frequent contact with blood and body fluids including IV devices and contaminated body fluids (blood, vomitus, stool, and amniotic fluid)
• Exposure to disinfectants, Betadine, room deodorizers, alcohol, and other chemicals per MSDS sheets
• Infrequent exposure to portable x-rays in patient rooms
• Minimal risk of TB or airborne pathogen exposure
• Use of protective equipment including gloves, gowns, masks, and goggles as required for universal precautions
