Registered Nurse II - ART Operating Room

The Ashley River Tower (ART) operating room is seeking a Registered Nurse II to provide perioperative nursing care in a high-acuity surgical environment. Located on the fourth floor of the ART building, this department performs adult outpatient and inpatient surgeries across multiple surgical service lines including general, plastics, oncology, cardiac, thoracic, heart and lung transplants, vascular, colorectal, bariatric, and robotics. The department is nationally recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, general surgery, and GI surgery, as well as for management of chronic pancreatitis and bariatric surgery. MUSC's heart and lung transplant program is certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and is the only heart and lung transplant program in South Carolina.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized, goal-directed patient care to patients and families at the competent level
• Utilize principles and practices of the nursing process to deliver safe and effective care
• Interact with members of the healthcare team to achieve desired patient outcomes
• Support both scrub and circulating nursing functions in the operating room

Clinical Setting

Operations are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. General, Vascular, and Cardiothoracic call teams are available to cover emergency cases prior to posted schedule times and on weekends. There is 24-hour charge nurse coverage for after-hours and weekend support.

Schedule

• 36 hours per week
• Three 12-hour shifts Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• On-call duties required

Required Qualifications

• Active RN license from the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider
• Minimum one year of work experience as a registered nurse

Education

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
• RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and must successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date

Compensation and Incentives

• Up to $30,000 sign-on bonus available for external candidates with a minimum of two years of operating room experience (scrub and circulating) who commit to a two-year service agreement

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously. Additional physical demands include frequent bending at the waist, twisting at the waist, squatting, pinching operations, gross and fine motor activities with fingers and hands, firm grasping, repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders, and reaching in all directions. The role requires frequent reaching overhead, working from elevated areas, and working in confined or cramped spaces. Infrequent climbing of stairs, kneeling, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and lifting objects from floor to 36 inches or from 36 inches to overhead are required. The position requires the ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, maintain 20/40 vision (corrected), recognize objects at various distances, match or discriminate colors, determine depth perception, maintain good peripheral vision, maintain hearing acuity (with correction), deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts, and work overtime as required. The role requires working in a latex-safe environment and maintaining tactile sensory functions. Selected positions may require good olfactory sensory function and qualification for respirator use.
