The opportunity

Job Description

Join the Neuroscience Stepdown Unit (9E) at Medical University Hospital Authority as a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) or Registered Nurse II. This 23-bed unit provides specialized care for adult patients with stroke, neurosurgery, neurology, and related high-acuity conditions. You will care for patients recovering from procedures such as tumor resections, spine surgery, and those with diagnoses including hemorrhagic stroke, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy monitoring.

Clinical Setting

9E is a fast-paced, high-functioning unit focused on safe patient outcomes. All patient rooms are equipped with bedside monitors capable of monitoring arterial lines, measuring central venous pressure (CVP) and intracranial pressure (ICP), and viewing SpO2 and EKG readings. The unit maintains staffing ratios of 1:3 or 1:4 depending on patient acuity and nurse experience, with support from Patient Care Technicians and a Unit Secretary.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, you will provide individualized, goal-directed patient care utilizing the nursing process. Your responsibilities include delivering safe and effective care, interacting with interdisciplinary healthcare team members to achieve desired patient outcomes, and supporting families throughout the care process.

Schedule

This is a regular, full-time position with 36 scheduled hours per week. You will work three 12-hour rotating shifts per week, including some weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license from the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider
  • Minimum one year of work experience as a registered nurse (required for RN II; new graduates may apply for RN I position)

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date

Certifications and Goals

  • NIHSS and ACLS certification required
  • SCRN (Stroke Certified Registered Nurse) and CNRN (Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse) certification is a goal within two years of employment

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform nursing duties in a hospital environment. You must be able to stand, sit, and walk continuously throughout your shift. Additional physical demands include frequent bending, twisting, reaching in all directions, squatting, kneeling, and fine motor manipulation. You will frequently work from elevated areas and in confined spaces. The role requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted infrequently, and to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently (such as assisting with patient transfers). You must maintain corrected vision of at least 20/40 in one or both eyes, good color discrimination, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Hearing acuity with correction is required. You must be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required and maintain tactile sensory function. Selected positions may require good olfactory function and qualification for respirator use.
