Join the Medical University Hospital Authority as a Registered Nurse on 8W, a 24-bed inpatient mixed General Surgery and Neuroscience unit located on the 8th floor of the main hospital. This position offers the opportunity to provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in a dynamic clinical environment.
Clinical Setting
8W is a specialized unit that manages a diverse patient population including general surgery and medicine patients with a focus on neuroscience. The unit cares for stroke patients, general neurology patients, neurosurgical patients, and supports the Comprehensive Spine Center program. Patient diagnoses range from strokes and brain tumors to spine surgeries. All patient rooms are private.
Position Overview
Registered Nurse I (New Graduate): Under general supervision, you will assist at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process. You will interact with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.
Registered Nurse II: Under general supervision, you will provide individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process. You will deliver safe and effective care and interact with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
Schedule
- 36 hours per week
- 3 twelve-hour rotating shifts per week
- Includes some weekends
- Rotating shifts (United States of America)

Required Qualifications
- Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider
Education Requirements
- Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless you are a current MUSC employee
- RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date
Physical and Mental Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously. You must be able to bend at the waist continuously, twist at the waist frequently, and squat frequently. The role requires frequent fine motor movements and gross motor functions, including the ability to perform pinching operations, firm grasping, and fine manipulation with fingers and hands continuously. You must be able to reach overhead and in all directions continuously, and use both legs fully and continuously for balance and coordination.
You must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted infrequently, lift/lower objects 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted infrequently, and lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 lbs infrequently. You must be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently. Examples include transferring a 100 lb patient that cannot assist in the transfer, which requires 50 lbs of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance from another healthcare worker will be required. You must be able to push a 400 lb patient in a wheelchair on carpet with 20 lbs of force and push a stretcher with a patient with one hand using 25 lbs of force.
Additional physical requirements include the ability to climb stairs infrequently, work from elevated areas frequently, work in confined or cramped spaces frequently, and perform job functions from kneeling positions infrequently. You must maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes continuously, see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance continuously, match or discriminate between colors continuously, determine distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously, and maintain good peripheral vision capabilities continuously. You must maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously and maintain tactile sensory functions continuously.
You must be able to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously, work rotating shifts frequently, work overtime as required frequently, and work in a latex safe environment continuously. Selected positions may require the ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function continuously and be qualified physically for respirator use initially and as required continuously.
