Job Description

The Medical University Hospital Authority is hiring a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) for the Medical Surgical ICU (MSICU). In this role, you will provide individualized, goal-directed patient care to patients and families at the advanced beginner level, utilizing the nursing process and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve desired outcomes.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Medical Surgical ICU, providing care to critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and intervention.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation)
  • Deliver patient and family-centered care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs
  • Develop nursing diagnoses, identify outcomes, plan interventions, coordinate care, and evaluate goal achievement
  • Direct and lead assigned team members and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide age and developmentally appropriate care
  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and demonstrating responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior
  • Participate in shared governance, adhere to standards of care, participate in peer review, and engage in professional development
  • Coordinate effective and efficient delivery of patient care services through application of care management principles
  • Identify clinical priorities and initiate action to improve patient outcomes
  • Demonstrate autonomous practice and accountability for actions and critical thinking

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • Three 12-hour shifts
  • Shifts vary based on departmental needs
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required

Required Qualifications

  • Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Education

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and must successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform the following functions:

  • Lift or lower objects 50 lbs from or to the floor or 36 inches unassisted infrequently
  • Lift 25 lbs from 36 inches to overhead infrequently
  • Exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently (for example, transferring patients)
  • Maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or both eyes continuously
  • See and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance continuously
  • Match or discriminate between colors continuously
  • Determine distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously
  • Maintain good peripheral vision continuously
  • Maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously
  • Perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements continuously
  • Deal effectively with stressful situations continuously
  • Work in a latex-safe environment continuously
  • Maintain good tactile sensory functions continuously
  • For selected positions: maintain good olfactory sensory function and be qualified physically for respirator use
