The opportunity

Job Description

Join ART 7 East, a dynamic 19-bed oncology and medical-surgical unit at Medical University Hospital Authority, as a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate). This position offers an excellent opportunity for new graduates to develop clinical expertise in a supportive environment while caring for adult patients with complex cancer diagnoses, including hematologic malignancies and solid organ tumors, as well as a diverse medical-surgical population ranging from moderate to high acuity.

Clinical Setting

ART 7 East specializes in the care of oncology and medical-surgical patients. The unit manages complex cancer diagnoses and provides specialized care for patients receiving high-risk chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and those enrolled in clinical trials. The team also addresses treatment-related side effects with close monitoring and individualized interventions.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, you will assist at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process. You will interact with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date
  • Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, either from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Professional Development

All nurses are required to complete the National Cancer Institute Collaborative Systemic Therapies Course within their first year to achieve chemotherapy competency. The unit strongly encourages specialty certification in oncology, medical-surgical nursing, and palliative care, fostering professional growth and excellence in patient-centered care.

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • 3 twelve-hour shifts; shifts vary based on departmental needs
  • Rotating shifts
  • Ability to work overtime as required

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously. You must be able to bend, twist, squat, and reach in all directions frequently. Fine and gross motor activities with hands and fingers are continuous requirements, including pinching, grasping, and fine manipulation. You will frequently reach overhead and perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

You must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted infrequently, and lift/lower objects of 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted infrequently. You will frequently exert up to 50 lbs of force (for example, transferring patients). You must maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one or both eyes, recognize objects at various distances, discriminate colors, determine depth perception, and maintain good peripheral vision and hearing acuity with correction.

You must be able to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously and work in a latex-safe environment. Infrequent requirements include climbing stairs, working outside in temperature extremes, working from elevated areas, working in confined/cramped spaces, kneeling, and lifting from 36 inches to overhead up to 25 lbs.
