Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) - ART 6W Acute Care
Ashley River Tower (ART) 6 West is a 21-bed acute care unit at Medical University Hospital Authority providing care to adult patients (age 18 or older) with a variety of diagnoses, including general medicine, GI surgery, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, cardiology, CT surgery, and hematology/oncology. The unit also cares for adolescents (age 14-17) under specific circumstances. As a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate), you will assist at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process. You will interact with other members of the health care team, including physicians, respiratory therapists, and ancillary staff, to achieve desired patient outcomes. The nursing staff works closely with colleagues on the Rapid Response team and in the Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU) to meet patient needs when a higher level of care is required.

ART 6W is an educational, collaborative work environment where nurses utilize a variety of devices, tools, and techniques to assist in the delivery of safe patient care. The unit offers a variety of staffing and scheduling options providing flexibility for new team members.

ART 6W has a unit-based Shared Governance Council that affords team members the opportunity to be involved in decisions affecting the unit and team workflows. Schedule
- 36 hours per week
- 3 twelve-hour rotating shifts per week, including some weekends
Required Qualifications
- Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, either from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or an AHA-recognized equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider
Education
- Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless you are a current MUSC employee
- If hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing, you are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of your hire or reclassification date
Physical and Mental Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously. You must be able to bend at the waist continuously, twist at the waist frequently, and squat frequently. The role requires frequent reaching overhead and in all directions, frequent fine motor movements, and continuous gross motor activities with fingers and hands. You must be able to perform firm grasping and fine manipulation with fingers and hands continuously, and perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders continuously.
You must be able to climb stairs infrequently, work from elevated areas frequently, and work in confined or cramped spaces frequently. Kneeling positions are required infrequently. You must be able to fully use both legs continuously and use lower extremities for balance and coordination frequently.
Physical strength requirements include the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds unassisted infrequently, lift or lower objects 50 pounds from or to the floor from or to 36 inches unassisted infrequently, and lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 pounds infrequently. You must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Examples include transferring a 100-pound patient who cannot assist in the transfer (requiring 50 pounds of force), pushing a 400-pound patient in a wheelchair on carpet (requiring 20 pounds of force), and pushing a stretcher with a patient with one hand (requiring 25 pounds of force). For every 100 additional pounds beyond 100 pounds, assistance from another healthcare worker will be required.
Vision requirements include the ability to maintain 20/40 vision (corrected) in one eye or with both eyes continuously, see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance continuously, match or discriminate between colors continuously, determine distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously, and maintain good peripheral vision capabilities continuously.
You must maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously and maintain tactile sensory functions continuously. You must be able to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously, work rotating shifts frequently, and work overtime as required frequently. You must be able to work in a latex-safe environment continuously. Selected positions may require the ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function continuously and be qualified physically for respirator use initially and as required continuously.
