The opportunity

Job Description

The Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) position is located on the Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit (ART 4E) at Medical University Hospital Authority. Under general supervision, you will provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process. You will work at the advanced beginner level and interact with other members of the healthcare team to achieve desired patient outcomes.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a 12-bed cardiothoracic stepdown unit within the Heart & Vascular service line at a medical center. This unit serves patients recovering from cardiac and thoracic procedures and conditions requiring intermediate-level nursing care.

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • 3 twelve-hour rotating shifts per week
  • Includes some weekends

Required Qualifications

  • Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or an AHA-recognized equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Education

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless you are a current MUSC employee
  • If hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing, you are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of your hire or reclassification date

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform the following functions:

  • Lift or lower objects 50 lbs from or to the floor from or to 36 inches unassisted infrequently
  • Lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 lbs infrequently
  • Exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently (for example, transferring a 100 lb patient who cannot assist requires 50 lbs of force; for every 100 additional pounds, assistance from another healthcare worker is required)
  • Maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes continuously
  • See and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance continuously
  • Match or discriminate between colors continuously
  • Determine distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously
  • Maintain good peripheral vision continuously
  • Maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously
