Job Description

Join the Medical University Hospital Authority as a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) on 8W, a 24-bed inpatient mixed General Surgery and Neuroscience unit located on the 8th floor of the main hospital. This position offers new graduates an excellent opportunity to develop nursing skills while providing individualized, goal-directed care to adult and geriatric patients in a supportive environment.

Clinical Setting

8W is a specialized unit that manages a diverse patient population including general surgery and medicine patients with a focus on neuroscience. The unit cares for stroke patients, general neurology patients, neurosurgical patients, and supports the Comprehensive Spine Center program. Patient diagnoses range from strokes and brain tumors to spine surgeries. All patient rooms are private, providing a modern clinical environment.

Role and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, you will assist at the advanced beginner level in providing nursing care to patients and families. Your responsibilities include utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process, interacting with other members of the healthcare team to achieve desired patient outcomes, and delivering individualized care that supports the unit's diverse patient population.

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • 3 twelve-hour rotating shifts per week
  • Includes some weekends

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license from the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless you are a current MUSC employee
  • If hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing, you are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously. You must be able to climb stairs infrequently, work indoors continuously, and work from elevated areas and confined/cramped spaces frequently. The role requires continuous bending at the waist, frequent twisting, squatting, pinching operations, and gross and fine motor activities with fingers and hands. You must be able to reach overhead and in all directions continuously, perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders continuously, and fully use both legs continuously with frequent use of lower extremities for balance and coordination.

Physical lifting and force requirements include the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted infrequently, lift/lower objects 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted infrequently, and lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 lbs infrequently. You must be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently. Examples include transferring a 100 lb patient that cannot assist in the transfer, which requires 50 lbs of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance from another healthcare worker will be required. Twenty pounds of force is needed to push a 400 lb patient in a wheelchair on carpet, and 25 lbs of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand.

Vision requirements include maintaining 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes continuously, seeing and recognizing objects close at hand or at a distance continuously, matching or discriminating between colors continuously, determining distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously, and maintaining good peripheral vision capabilities continuously.

You must maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously, perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements continuously, deal effectively with stressful situations continuously, work rotating shifts frequently, and work overtime as required frequently. You must work in a latex-safe environment continuously and maintain tactile sensory functions continuously. Selected positions may require the ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function continuously and be qualified physically for respirator use initially and as required continuously.
