Main 6 West is a 15-bed Specialty Medicine and Acute Care unit providing individualized, goal-directed nursing care to adult patients with complex medical conditions. As a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate), you will work at the advanced beginner level under general supervision, collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve desired patient outcomes.

The unit specializes in caring for patients with complex liver disease, acute kidney injury, liver failure, cirrhosis, and those preparing for or recovering from liver transplant, along with a wide range of other acute medical conditions. The diversity and acuity of the patient population ensures continuous learning and ongoing opportunities to expand clinical expertise while building a strong foundation in specialty medicine.

Clinical Setting

Main 6 West is a specialty medicine and acute care unit within the Medical University Hospital Authority. The unit is committed to professional growth and clinical excellence, providing a supportive, team-focused environment where nurses refine time management, prioritization, and critical thinking skills that translate across multiple practice settings.

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • 3 twelve-hour shifts
  • Shifts vary based on departmental needs
  • Ability to work rotating shifts required
  • Ability to work overtime as required

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license from the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Education

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and must successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform nursing duties in a hospital setting with frequent physical demands:

  • Continuous standing, sitting, and walking
  • Continuous bending at the waist and reaching in all directions
  • Frequent twisting at the waist, squatting, kneeling, and working from elevated areas
  • Frequent working in confined or cramped spaces
  • Frequent fine and gross motor activities with hands and fingers
  • Frequent repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders
  • Frequent use of lower extremities for balance and coordination
  • Infrequent stair climbing, working outside in temperature extremes, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs unassisted
  • Ability to exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently (for example, transferring patients)
  • Continuous vision capabilities including 20/40 corrected vision, color discrimination, depth perception, and peripheral vision
  • Continuous hearing acuity with correction
  • Continuous ability to maintain tactile sensory functions
  • Continuous ability to deal effectively with stressful situations
  • Continuous work in a latex-safe environment
  • Selected positions may require good olfactory sensory function and physical qualification for respirator use
