The opportunity

Job Description

Join the 10 West Trauma and Spine unit at Medical University Hospital as a Registered Nurse I (New Graduate). Located on the top floor of the Main Hospital, 10 West is a 21-bed acute care unit that provides individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families. The unit accepts a diverse patient population including trauma patients from car accidents, assaults, and traumatic falls, as well as patients undergoing elective spine surgeries and overflow from the Emergency Department and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. While technically classified as acute care, the unit often operates at an intermediate care acuity level. The unit is led by strong supportive leaders and staffed by kind, welcoming team members who foster an environment of integrity, teamwork, and professional development.

Schedule

  • 36 hours per week
  • 3 twelve-hour shifts
  • Rotating shifts with variation based on departmental needs
  • Overtime may be required

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process
  • Assist at the advanced beginner level under general supervision
  • Interact with other members of the healthcare team to achieve desired patient outcomes

Required Qualifications

  • Active licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Education

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred
  • If hired with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing on or after July 1, 2013, you are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking continuously

  • Ability to lift or lower objects 50 lbs from or to the floor from or to 36 inches unassisted infrequently
  • Ability to lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 lbs infrequently
  • Ability to exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently (for example, transferring a 100 lb patient who cannot assist requires 50 lbs of force; for every 100 additional pounds, assistance from another healthcare worker is required)
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes continuously
  • Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance continuously
  • Ability to match or discriminate between colors continuously
  • Ability to determine distance and relationship between objects with good depth perception continuously
  • Good peripheral vision capabilities continuously
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously
  • Ability to work rotating shifts frequently
