Merit Health is seeking a Registered Nurse - House Supervisor to provide critical leadership during assigned shifts and oversee hospital operations while ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. This role serves as the administrative point of contact during non-business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee hospital operations during assigned shifts, ensuring appropriate staffing levels across departments to meet patient care needs
  • Monitor hospital census, coordinate admissions, discharges, and transfers, and ensure optimal bed utilization
  • Act as the administrative point of contact for staff, patients, and families during non-business hours, addressing inquiries, resolving conflicts, and providing support
  • Respond to emergencies, crises, and critical patient care issues, coordinating resources and personnel to ensure safety and quality care
  • Serve as the incident commander in disaster situations until relieved by a senior leader, ensuring effective communication and resource allocation
  • Supervise nursing staff, providing clinical guidance, oversight, and support to ensure proper delegation and care delivery
  • Promote efficient use of organizational resources to deliver cost-effective and safe patient care services
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, identifying and addressing deviations
  • Handle patient and family complaints and inquiries with professionalism, empathy, and appropriate resolution strategies
  • Complete and validate the midnight census, ensuring accurate patient counts and bed status are reported
  • Conduct hospital rounds to assess staff and patient needs, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards
  • Facilitate communication between staff, physicians, and administration to resolve issues and maintain operational efficiency
  • Provide administrative decision-making support in the absence of department managers or senior administrators, escalating critical issues to the Administrator on Call as needed
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement and assist in implementing initiatives to enhance care delivery and patient satisfaction
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate supply of resources, ensuring staff have the tools necessary to provide quality care
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and comply with all policies and standards

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and oversee departmental staff
  • Schedule employees to ensure effective use of resources and consult with Manager or Director on staffing issues
  • Assist with and contribute to performance evaluations and goal setting
  • Assist in managing departmental budget ensuring cost-effective operations while maintaining high quality service
  • Monitor expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services
  • Contribute to evaluation and implementation of new technologies to enhance operational efficiency
  • Contribute to development of departmental policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and accreditation processes as applicable
  • Follow established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and safety
  • Work closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery
  • Stay up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes
  • Work in a staff role when required, ensuring that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or higher in Nursing
  • 1-2 years of related experience in the nursing profession
  • Active RN licensure (State or Compact State)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. for any employer (this position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship now or in the future)
