North Oaks Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse for the General Surgery Unit. In this full-time role, you will provide direct patient care to surgical patients, including pre- and post-operative assessments, trauma and stroke patients, and less acute telemetry patients. You will be responsible for implementing the nursing process, administering medications and blood products, managing IV conscious sedation, and assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. This position requires standing and walking for extended periods, with occasional lifting and transporting of patients.
Schedule
- 7 PM shift with rotating weekends
- Full-time, non-exempt position
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care using the nursing process
- Administer medications as ordered by physicians and document patient responses
- Administer blood, blood components, hyperalimentation, and chemotherapy according to hospital policy
- Monitor patients receiving IV conscious sedation per policy
- Assist with quality assurance audits
- Maintain accurate documentation using vital sign records, nurses' notes, and other appropriate forms
- Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including dress code, incident reporting, and medication error reporting
- Maintain knowledge of hospital safety codes and perform duties during drills and emergencies
- Report unsafe conditions and incidents
- Account for narcotics and controlled substances
- Assist with insertion and management of central lines and chest tubes
- Access and utilize Lifeport systems
- Demonstrate knowledge of individual surgeon preferences
- Assist department management with policy maintenance, personnel scheduling, and data collection
- Promote satisfactory communication and relationships with the healthcare team
- Participate in committee meetings and in-service programs as designated
- Perform other duties as requested
- Follow North Oaks Health System's Compliance Program and all Federal and State regulatory guidelines
- Adhere to the Nurse Practice Act and Rules and Regulations of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current Louisiana RN license
- Current CPR certification
- Completed approved IV course
- Proficiency in pre-procedure assessment
- Ability to utilize various computer systems including EPIC, HBOC, Hill-Rom Composer, Net Learning, AYS, PAR Excellence, Pyxis, and Oak Link
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift and transport patients occasionally, and demonstrate motor coordination and manual dexterity
Certifications and Professional Development
- Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Charge Nurses must complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Yearly completion of Competency Lab
- Professional organization membership is encouraged
