Registered Nurse - Family Health

This position is a Registered Nurse in Family Practice at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, serving a diverse patient population across the lifespan in a military treatment facility (MTF) setting. You will provide comprehensive nursing care including patient assessment, health promotion, education, and clinical interventions while collaborating with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a family practice clinic within a military medical treatment facility, providing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, obstetric, and geriatric patients. The clinic supports a large patient volume with diverse healthcare needs and illnesses.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive physical exams and health histories
• Assess patients and evaluate needs both in-person and telephonically
• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and respond appropriately in emergency situations
• Administer medications, wound care, and other personalized clinical interventions
• Perform and assist with procedures including injections, IV medications and infusions, oxygen administration, visual acuity tests, EKGs, EEGs, and phlebotomy according to established protocols
• Set up, operate, and monitor specialized medical equipment such as cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, and nebulizers
• Provide health promotion, counseling, and education to patients and families
• Conduct telephone triage and determine optimal timing and location for patient management (emergency room, clinic, or home care)
• Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate
• Support nurse-run clinics such as urinary tract infection and strep throat clinics
• Prescribe and communicate treatment plans and patient teaching in accordance with established protocols
• Provide ongoing education programs to promote and maintain optimal wellness levels
• Coordinate patient care with community health agencies and social programs
• Facilitate continuity of care and maintain knowledge of available military treatment system resources
• Consult with medical personnel, legal authorities, and military commanders as required
• Ensure patient and staff safety through safety awareness, proper infection control, and maintenance of a clean, orderly clinic environment
• Recognize, report, and correct potential safety hazards
• Clean and store equipment properly at the end of each shift and ensure preventive maintenance
• Ensure medication and supply replenishment
• Participate in orientation, training, and evaluation of newly assigned personnel
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives including peer reviews, patient safety monitoring, infection control monitoring, process improvement, access to care, customer service, and productivity initiatives
• Direct and guide supporting government employees during clinical duties
• Maintain statistical records of clinical workload
• Participate in medical education programs and quality improvement functions
• Attend and participate in meetings, professional staff conferences, quality improvement meetings, and other professional activities as directed
• Maintain open and professional communication with MTF staff, customers, and contractor employees
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with all documentation requirements
• Complete medical records documentation within 72 business hours of patient encounter
• Maintain coding accuracy at 90% or higher for procedures and treatment
• Complete initial and annual telehealth training and telehealth peer reviews
• Complete competency assessments and competency peer reviews as required

Schedule

Minimum 40 hours per week. Scheduled shifts are normally Monday through Friday between 0630-1730, with shifts of a minimum of 9 hours per day including a one-hour unpaid lunch break. Schedules may vary to accommodate demand. You will not be required to work weekends or federal holidays. Any schedule changes must be submitted to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or minimum of 3 years of nursing experience with an Associate Degree in Nursing (may be considered)
• Graduation from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
• Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse from a United States jurisdiction, state, or territory
• Minimum of 36 months of experience as a Clinical Nurse within the last 48 months
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Healthcare Provider (HCP) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring certification using The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses guidelines, recertified every two years
• Proficiency with computer operations including basic word processing, data entry, and automated medical records
• Ability to use basic computer skills to enter and extract patient data from systems including Composite Health Care System (CHCS), Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (ALTHA), Essentris, Genesis, and Integrated Clinical Database (ICDB)
