The opportunity

Job Description

Houston Methodist is seeking a Registered Nurse II for the Emergency Department at The Woodlands Hospital. This is a non-exempt position providing direct patient care to a diverse population with varied and complex needs. You will conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, provide patient education, and maintain medical records. The RN II functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of clinical practice, demonstrating clinical competence in patient care delivery, technology use, medication administration, procedure performance, and emergency management.

You will communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care. You will act as a patient and family advocate, monitoring and maintaining patient rights. This position includes progressive leadership responsibilities such as participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and potentially contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Clinical Setting

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is a 725,000-square-foot, full-service acute-care facility that opened in June 2017. In January 2022, the hospital completed a $250 million expansion project that added 106 beds and expanded the emergency department, endoscopy center, and diagnostic imaging department with enhanced neurodiagnostic and interventional capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care effectively and efficiently to patients with varied and complex needs
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and assist with exams and treatment
  • Administer medications and perform procedures with clinical competence
  • Manage emergencies and provide crisis intervention
  • Develop, update, and communicate plans of care in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team
  • Prioritize care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences
  • Provide patient teaching based on learning needs and evaluate comprehension
  • Advocate on behalf of patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation
  • Communicate therapeutically with patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • Contribute to teamwork by offering assistance and responding positively to requests
  • Coach and mentor other staff and students, including preceptorship responsibilities
  • Identify areas for practice improvement using research-based evidence
  • Report near misses and collaborate on quality and safety initiatives
  • Manage time effectively to minimize unnecessary overtime
  • Contribute to meeting department financial targets through efficiency optimization
  • Identify and present areas for innovation and improvement in patient care or unit operations
  • Champion new care pathways and support service line implementation

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential
  • Twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment
  • Active Registered Nurse license from Texas Board of Nursing (Texas State Licensure or PSV Compact Licensure; permanent Texas license must be obtained within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or Instructor credential from American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or Instructor credential from American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or Instructor credential from American Heart Association (must be obtained within 4 months)
  • National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSTROKE) certification from American Heart Association (must be obtained within 4 months)
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCRISIS) certification or Instructor credential from Crisis Prevention Institute (must be obtained within 4 months)
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
  • Ability to function independently and exercise clinical judgment
  • Proficient time management skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook

Schedule

  • Night shift (3rd shift)
  • On-call duties required (employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events)
  • May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area
  • Scrubs required as work attire

Work Environment

This position requires the ability to safely perform assigned duties as determined through ongoing skills and competency assessments. You will work in a fast-paced emergency department environment with exposure to complex patient situations and the need to exercise independent clinical judgment.
