Registered Nurse - Emergency - 0500-3

Valley Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department at VMC Main Campus in Renton, Washington. This is a full-time position (0.9 FTE) working day shift hours (0500-3).

As a staff RN in the Emergency Department, you will assume responsibility and accountability for a group of patients during your designated shift. You will provide safe, quality care utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice. You will work under the direction of the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager.

Responsibilities

• Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit
• Recognize when it is necessary to assume a charge nurse role and perform those duties as needed
• Make staff assignments that reflect patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and admit/transfer/discharge activity
• Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit policies, procedures, standards, and objectives
• Integrate new and agency staff into the unit culture
• Function as a clinical leader and role model for nursing staff
• Act as a clinical resource to unit staff and demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment
• Monitor and evaluate nursing care through direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds
• Assess unit and environmental safety during rounds and report or correct deficiencies
• Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and nursing practice acts
• Monitor documentation compliance and facilitate rapid improvement cycles
• Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and respond to patient and family concerns
• Report significant events to administrative supervisors and activate the chain of command per policy
• Provide input into performance appraisals of clinical staff on your assigned shift
• Evaluate and provide adequate coverage for breaks
• Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring and adjusting staffing during shift
• Accept personal responsibility to maintain competencies for direct patient care and team leadership
• Communicate and collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite placement

Physical Demands

• Provide safe patient handling as defined in VMC's Safe Patient Handling guidelines
• Safely and appropriately transfer or move patients of varying abilities, weights, and amounts of staff assistance
• Lift from floor to overhead levels and carry items at waist level up to 40 pounds
• Participate in team lifting
• Operate patient lifting equipment and patient handling devices accurately and safely
• Stoop, bend, reach, crouch, and squat as needed
• Stand and walk for extensive periods as required for patient care, moving patients or supplies, hourly rounding, bedside shift report, and other nursing duties
• Demonstrate full body range of motion including ability to reach from floor to overhead levels
• Possess manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
• Have corrected vision and hearing to normal range
• Distinguish colors

Required Qualifications

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington
• Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months of experience as a Registered Nurse
• Current BLS certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• ACLS and PALS certification within 3 months of hire
• NIHSS certification within 3 months of hire
• TNCC certification within 12 months of hire
• ENPC certification within 12 months of hire
• One year of experience in Emergency nursing preferred, or successful completion of ED residency

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Two years of practice in clinical nursing or leadership in Emergency Department

Compensation

• Salary range: $48.82 - $89.19 per hour, based on experience and education (DOE)
