Registered Nurse - ED (Nights (FH)

This is a night shift Registered Nurse position in the Emergency Department. You will provide age-specific nursing care to a diverse group of patients using the full nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. You will collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate and implement procedures and treatments, using clinical judgment and leadership skills to direct patient care activities.

Responsibilities

• Assess patients' physiologic health status by conducting patient interviews, reviewing charts, assessing gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological systems, determining mobility and sensory deficits, assessing pain levels, and communicating findings through proper documentation
• Assess patients' psychosocial health status by eliciting perceptions of care, determining coping mechanisms and knowledge levels, identifying cultural and ethnic requirements, and documenting psychological status and care plans including referrals to support services
• Identify patient outcomes by developing measurement criteria, identifying actual and potential problems, assessing teaching needs, and establishing individualized patient goals
• Formulate and prioritize plans of care by identifying care activities, coordinating cost-effective use of supplies and equipment, and collaborating with physicians and team members
• Implement plans of care by maintaining patient safety, exercising professional nursing skills, reassessing and revising care as needed, administering treatments correctly, using equipment safely, providing emotional support, applying scientific principles, making accurate observations, maintaining accurate documentation, responding effectively to emergencies, creating a calm environment, communicating with families, and planning for discharge with appropriate referrals
• Evaluate care provided by measuring effectiveness, performing variance analysis, designing systems for care improvement, and maintaining accurate documentation
• Collaborate with care team members by working with physicians on patient plans, accurately implementing treatment regimens, assisting with procedures, keeping team members informed of patient changes, and delegating appropriately to support staff
• Perform decubitus care including preventive skin care measures, applying simple dressings using aseptic technique, applying warm and cold compresses, performing irrigations, and performing other skin care procedures as necessary
• Administer medications correctly and safely by identifying medication actions, dosages, and side effects, meeting medication administration standards, preparing local solutions and IV drips, administering and documenting medications correctly, administering IVP medications per policy, and educating patients and families about drug and food interactions
• Participate in patient and family education by explaining conditions, communicating assessment data to team members, utilizing health teaching opportunities, planning for early discharge, and evaluating teaching effectiveness

Required Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
• Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred. If hired after September 1, 2010, you must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within 24 months of employment and obtain your BSN degree within five years of your employment date.

Licenses and Certifications

• BCLS and ACLS certifications are preferred

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of Medical/Surgical or Telemetry experience
