This position is a Registered Nurse role in an Emergency Department setting. You will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients presenting with acute and emergency conditions, including trauma, cardiac disorders, obstetrical emergencies, and pediatric emergencies. You will work collaboratively with physicians and multidisciplinary team members to assess patients, develop and implement plans of care, and advocate for patient needs in a fast-paced, complex clinical environment.
Responsibilities
- Complete patient assessments using triage protocols, formulate individualized plans of care, oversee implementation, and evaluate and adjust plans utilizing critical thinking skills
- Administer medications, intravenous therapy, and treatments as prescribed by licensed independent practitioners
- Perform EKG procedures and interpret findings, providing appropriate nursing interventions
- Manage nursing care for trauma, cardiac-related disorders, obstetrical emergencies, and pediatric emergencies
- Provide health teaching and counseling using Teach Back methodology to confirm patient comprehension
- Supervise, delegate, and follow through with other personnel in performing nursing care activities
- Mentor and precept students and orient new staff as assigned
- Participate in discharge planning and transition of care, identifying patient needs
- Serve as a patient advocate and escalate patient-related concerns in a timely manner
- Document pertinent findings in the medical record in a timely manner
- Assist patients with activities of daily living
- Use effective communication skills and active listening; practice Hands Off communication utilizing SBAR
- Perform bedside shift reporting utilizing SBAR methodology
- Ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, coworkers, and self
- Participate on various teams, committees, and performance improvement initiatives
- Report pertinent information up the chain of command to the Clinical Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager, or House Nurse Coordinator
- Function as a positive influence and role model, adhering to professional code of conduct
- Respect the dignity and confidentiality of all patient-related matters
- Perform other job duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing
- Minimum one year of acute care nursing experience; one year of experience should be relevant to the Emergency Department
- Active Registered Nurse license in the state
- BLS certification
- ACLS certification
- Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification
- NIH Stroke certification
- Advanced Dysrhythmia/EKG certification
- De-escalation training within 6 months of hire
- Ability to pass medication exam
- Basic computer skills
- Completion of hospital-approved emergency care training program with documented competence in emergency care procedures as determined by the Director of Nursing Services
- Competence in moderate sedation
- Competence in stroke protocols
- Competence in restraint procedures
- Adequate orientation to unit policies, procedures, equipment, safety procedures, and infection control practices
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with providers at all levels
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally and effectively influence others to achieve necessary outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to follow direction and facilitate a working environment conducive to change
- Exhibit critical thinking skills
