Registered Nurse - Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit

Newport Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit. In this part-time position, you will provide compassionate, patient-centered care to adolescents in a behavioral health setting under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager. You will act as a patient advocate, applying the nursing process while recognizing the unique developmental and age-specific needs of adolescent patients.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a specialized adolescent behavioral health unit at Newport Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. The role requires you to work night shifts, 24 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday with every other weekend and holiday rotation. Daily shifts are 12 hours.

Responsibilities

• Recognize and report deviations from patient or established norms
• Identify deviations from established norms not related to the patient's chief complaints
• Report patient responses to treatment and document nursing interventions
• Provide basic comfort and support according to patient needs
• Foster patient and family participation in achieving optimum functioning and activities of daily living
• Set priorities in individual patient assignments
• Seek guidance and resources when necessary in management of patient care
• Identify and assess emergency situations and initiate appropriate response and intervention
• Plan for potential needs during emergency situations
• Define nursing diagnoses and expected patient outcomes
• Modify nursing plan of care based on diagnosis and/or outcomes
• Document on appropriate nursing assessment forms
• Implement nursing interventions and evaluate based on patient outcomes
• Maintain knowledge of contemporary professional nursing practice within the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act
• Attend training and retraining as needed to maintain current knowledge of hospital and patient care practices
• Utilize established protocols and collaborate with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions
• Participate in quality improvement processes and risk management activities
• Attend unit-based and hospital meetings to facilitate patient care management
• Function cooperatively and productively in the work environment
• Integrate complete physical assessment with nursing assessment in developing comprehensive, individualized plans of care
• Follow all documentation guidelines per policy and procedure
• Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
• Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff
• Demonstrate self-direction in maintaining and advancing clinical and professional competency
• Provide functional guidance and direction to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel as required
• May assume shift charge responsibility, including maintaining overview of unit activities and delegating work responsibilities
• Make bed and patient assignments and assign primary patients to staff

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license in Rhode Island or licensure in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an associate's degree in nursing (minimum)
• Current BLS Certification from the American Heart Association
• Understanding of the provisions of the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act
• Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and sensitivity to cultural diversity

Preferred Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in nursing
• General nursing experience appropriate to specialty units

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Prolonged standing and walking
• Exposure to all patient elements
• Repeated bending, squatting, lifting, and stooping
• No driving required

Schedule

• Part-time, 24 hours per week
• Night shift
• 12-hour daily shifts
• Monday through Friday with every other weekend and holiday rotation

Compensation

• Pay range: $35.70 to $71.40 per hour
