Clinical research experience
Vanderbilt Health's Adult Clinical Research Center is seeking a Registered Nurse 2 to join our day shift team. This 40-hour per week position involves 2–12-hour shifts and 2–8-hour shifts providing specialized nursing care to both inpatient and outpatient research participants. You will administer investigational medications ranging from simple to complex research protocols, including high-volume IV infusions such as monoclonal antibody therapies for rare diseases and insulin infusions for metabolic studies, as well as subcutaneous and oral research medications. Your clinical expertise in nursing assessment, IV placement, EKG administration, procedural setup and assistance, and patient observation will be essential. You will perform frequent vital signs, EKGs, and lab draws including centrifuging research blood samples, with particular attention to detail in monitoring patients following investigational medication administration.
Clinical Setting
Vanderbilt Health operates eight hospitals and over 180 clinics as the region's largest comprehensive academic health system. The Adult Clinical Research Center serves both inpatient and outpatient populations engaged in clinical research studies.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate in establishing the plan of care and coordinate and implement care delivery while anticipating patient care needs
- Analyze comprehensive information pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine nursing diagnoses
- Utilize the nursing process to evaluate patient progress toward goals and apply appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes
- Employ strategies to promote health and a safe environment
- Administer investigational IV infusions, subcutaneous medications, and oral research medications
- Perform nursing assessments and patient evaluations
- Conduct patient interviews and physical examinations
- Perform IV placement, EKG administration, and procedural setup and assistance
- Obtain frequent vital signs, EKGs, and lab draws
- Centrifuge research blood samples
- Observe patients following investigational medication administration
- Provide patient education
- Recognize clinical problems and contact the patient's primary care provider and other healthcare team members as needed
- Gather pertinent clinical data to aid in referral, treatment, or other clinical pathways
Schedule
This position includes a weekend rotation approximately once every 6 weeks. The clinic is closed on holidays.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved nursing program
- Active Registered Nurse licensure
- Minimum 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical research experience
Certifications and Training
ACLS and BLS certification are required. Biotherapy infusion training and specialized research training will be provided.
