The opportunity

Job Description

The Department of Perioperative Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse 1 for the Operating Room. This is a full performance level nursing position providing direct patient care in the perioperative setting under the general direction of a higher level registered nurse or licensed healthcare provider.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare or assist with preparation of nursing care plans consistent with patients' comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs
  • Carry out treatment procedures, administer medications, and monitor patients' conditions
  • Record notes and maintain patients' medical records and nursing care plans, including nursing care, medications, treatments, reactions to care and treatment, intake and output of liquids and solids, and vital signs
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual care plans as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Modify nursing care plans based on patient condition and responses to care and treatment
  • Triage patients by inquiring about illnesses, injuries, and symptoms, and record findings and observations
  • Assess findings and either refer patients directly to a physician in emergency cases or initiate appropriate remedial action; as directed, assist physicians with treatment functions
  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals
  • Practice and ensure compliance with established infection control policies and procedures
  • May train paraprofessional staff by demonstrating nursing techniques and providing instructions on use of techniques and nursing equipment

Required Qualifications

  • Active license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • One year of relevant clinical experience
