Public Health Nurse - School Nurse (Consultative)

This position provides nursing services to students and families in the Lakeview School District as part of the Calhoun County Public Health Department's School Wellness Program. Working under the general direction of the Community Public Health Supervisor, you will serve as a subject matter expert in school health, supporting student wellness, chronic disease management, and emergency response protocols across multiple school buildings.

Responsibilities

• Assist with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for general education and special education students
• Deliver age-appropriate health education lessons covering hygiene, nutrition, dental health, and germ prevention
• Work with school personnel to improve understanding of chronic health issues
• Communicate with parents and other healthcare providers as appropriate
• Provide input for new or revised policies and procedures
• Provide health information, answer questions, and offer referrals as needed
• Collaborate with other school nurses to implement, train, and maintain Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) protocols across all district buildings

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license in Michigan
• Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Time management skills
• Ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects with concentration and attention to detail despite frequent distractions
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from diverse identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
• Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, perform repetitive movements, and work in confined areas

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

• Active Registered Nurse license in Michigan required

Clinical Setting

This role is based in the Lakeview School District and involves work across multiple school buildings. The position is hybrid eligible with a fixed schedule.

Schedule and Travel

• Hybrid work arrangement with fixed schedule
• Travel required between schools
• On-call availability to respond to emergencies, including program-related and public health emergencies
• Extended workdays beyond 8 hours and weekend or holiday work may be required

Working Conditions

• Largely sedentary role with extensive computer work
• Potential contact with infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens
