The Kansas City, MO School District is seeking a PRN School Nurse (RN/LPN) to provide nursing services across a designated zone of schools. This role strengthens the educational process by addressing health-related barriers to learning and promoting wellness among students and staff. You will serve as a liaison between physicians, families, and community agencies, delivering health assessments, interventions, referrals, and health-related instruction.
Responsibilities
Student Health Management
- Cover openings at schools due to regular school nurses taking PTO, and may be asked to cover long-term vacancies created during the school year
- Assist nurses at their home schools during special events such as screenings, medical field trips, and other designated activities
- Conduct health screenings and assessments to identify at-risk individuals and existing health problems
- Develop and implement nursing care plans, including medication administration and special health care procedures
- Manage immunization records and ensure compliance with state statutes
- Assess and address student injuries and illnesses, providing appropriate first aid and documentation
- Identify and manage communicable diseases common to school-age populations
Health Education and Counseling
- Provide health counseling and guidance to students, parents, and staff
- Teach first aid procedures and emergency care
- Present health information in an organized and age-appropriate manner
- Educate students, families, and staff on health conditions and treatment plans
- Encourage teachers to incorporate health concepts into the curriculum
Collaboration and Coordination
- Collaborate with health professionals, community agencies, and school staff to ensure continuity of care
- Serve as a liaison between physicians, families, and community resources
- Report appropriate health information to local health units
- Participate in disaster drills and safety assessments
Professional Development and Compliance
- Maintain compliance with the Missouri Nursing Practice Act and relevant statutes
- Continuously update knowledge and incorporate new techniques in school health
- Document essential health information and maintain accurate records
- Assess the school environment for safety and health hazards
Required Qualifications
- Active license in the State of Missouri as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
- Graduation from an accredited Associate's degree program in Nursing (ADN)
- Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification
- Proficiency in Word and Excel
- Experience in a school or medical setting
Physical Demands
Employees must be able to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, bend, stoop, lift up to 25 pounds, and kneel on the floor. Must be able to walk stairs and assist in lifting students in emergencies.
Compensation
Salary Grade (RN):
- RN with Bachelor degree or higher in Nursing (Z16): $49,700 – $71,374
- All other registered nurses (Z15): $47,200 – $67,783
