Join Inova Fairfax Hospital's L.J. Children's Hospital as a PRN Registered Nurse in Pediatric Oncology. This position offers day and night shift flexibility in a nationally recognized, 226-bed children's hospital that provides comprehensive medical services and specialized care for infants, children, and adolescents throughout Northern Virginia.

Clinical Setting

Inova Children's Hospital is an award-winning, full-service facility devoted to the healthcare of younger patients. The pediatric oncology unit serves children with cancer and related conditions, requiring specialized knowledge and compassionate care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient health assessments by interpreting multiple data sets and synthesizing their interrelationships
  • Formulate individualized plans of care based on assessment findings and interpret trends in patient populations to achieve best practice
  • Conduct all patient care in a patient and family-centered manner, integrating knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum of care
  • Advocate for patients' rights from the patient and family perspective and provide counsel while acting as a resource to resolve issues
  • Access resources from all disciplines to achieve desired patient outcomes and coordinate healthcare and alternate services for patient and family transition planning
  • Document all patient care activities according to documentation standards and assist healthcare team members with documentation
  • Evaluate processes to achieve outcomes, anticipate patient variances, and make revisions to plans of care
  • Make clinical decisions based on experience, patient population data, and clinical intuition while promoting the development of clinical decision-making in all team members
  • Communicate effectively, work cooperatively with others, and demonstrate respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines
  • Assist staff to assess patients' learning needs and outcomes measurement of patient education
  • Provide direction and guidance to others regarding practice while serving as a clinical resource, preceptor, and mentor; delegate patient care activities and coordinate unit activities as needed
  • Utilize standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery and ensure that the process for delivery of care is synthesized from direct patient and family communication, technology, and other healthcare team member collaboration
  • Demonstrate evidence of self-development by obtaining a minimum of six formal contact hours and maintain your own Team Member Continuing Education Record
  • Evaluate clinical and quality outcomes and contribute to performance improvement initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse, or hold an active multi-state Registered Nurse license
  • One year of nursing experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Associate's Degree in Nursing (if Associate's Degree, must complete BSN within 5 years of start date)
  • Basic Life Support certification from American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years of pediatric oncology experience
