Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner - Gastroenterology

Join our gastroenterology team as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a collaborative clinical environment. You will work alongside residents, fellows, attending physicians, and staff to provide comprehensive care to outpatient clinic patients. This role combines direct patient care with teaching and leadership responsibilities in a dynamic healthcare setting.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an outpatient gastroenterology clinic within our organization, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team including physicians, residents, medical students, staff nurses, and discharge coordinators. You will work under the supervision of the Medical Director or an approved staff physician.

Responsibilities

• Provide primary and urgent medical management for patients in the outpatient clinic setting
• Perform emergency stabilization of critically ill patients as needed
• Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of medical and nursing care
• Deliver patient education and coordinate discharge planning
• Teach residents and medical students
• Contribute to staff development and education initiatives
• Utilize approved medical practices in all patient care delivery
• Provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to patient populations served
• Maintain inquiry toward medical practices and patient care outcomes, and may develop research methodology
• Adapt communication and care approaches to specific patient populations, respecting privacy and individual needs
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
• Report any known or suspected unethical conduct, patient safety concerns, or compliance issues immediately

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant medicine or Health Sciences, or graduation from an approved Physician Assistant Training Program
• Active license as a Physician Assistant in the state of practice
• NCCPA certification
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Eligibility for prescriptive authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Medical Examiners
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout and between facilities
• Computer skills and proficiency with Windows-style applications and software packages specific to the role
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at department and system levels
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including 24/7 availability, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of related working experience

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position requires medium work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently. You must be able to stand for prolonged periods and perform stooping, bending, reaching, and grabbing with arms and hands, requiring manual dexterity.

Duties performed routinely involve exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue. You will work directly with patients and specimens that may contain communicable diseases, creating an occupational risk for exposure. You may also be exposed to hazardous medications or hazardous waste through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and disposal of contaminated materials.
