Northwestern Medicine seeks a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner to join our Stroke Neurology team. In this inpatient role, you will provide direct clinical care to stroke patients, participate in daily rounding, evaluate acute stroke presentations, and respond to stroke alerts as part of a multidisciplinary stroke team.
Clinical Setting
You will work in an inpatient hospital setting focused on stroke neurology care. This position involves collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient health assessments including histories and physical examinations
- Provide direct clinical care to assigned patient populations
- Prescribe and order medications, therapies, laboratory tests, imaging, and procedures according to clinical privileges
- Evaluate patients to determine need for further healthcare
- Document all care, education, and procedures in the medical record
- Refer patients to other disciplines as appropriate
- Serve as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise
- Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in clinical decision-making
- Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families
- Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community
- Participate in quality improvement and research initiatives pertinent to stroke neurology
- Mentor graduate students in advanced practice and patient care
- Participate in unit, departmental, divisional, or hospital committees and task forces as appropriate
- Provide formal education to internal and external groups in your specialty
- Maintain professional appearance, manner, and presentation
- Maintain all required certifications and continuing education for licensure and privileging
Schedule
- 36 hours per week consisting of three 12-hour shifts
- Rotating weekend expectation
- No on-call duties
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited school of nursing OR Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
- For APRNs: Acute care certification required (inpatient NP experience may be considered in lieu of acute care certification)
- Current Illinois RN license and current Illinois Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license with certification by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board, with ability to apply for controlled substance license and DEA number; OR Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program with current Illinois PA license and ability to apply for controlled substance license and DEA number
- Privileged and credentialed through Northwestern Medicine Medical Staff Office
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-2 years of neurology experience
