Sharp Grossmont is seeking a Pharmacy Technician IV Specialist for Home Infusion to support the pharmacy team in preparing and distributing intravenous medications. This per diem position operates on day shifts between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM with variable start and end times, requiring on-call availability and weekend work as needed.
You will assist the pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services by performing technical tasks involved in the preparation, documentation, and distribution of intravenous medications. You will provide operational, developmental, and quality assurance support for IV admixture programs while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and safety.
Responsibilities
IV Medication Dispensing and Clinical IV Practice
- Prepare IV admixtures with consistently high accuracy using strict aseptic technique, selecting correct medications and calculating admixture contents
- Prepare all IV admixtures in strict accordance with established guidelines
- Handle and prepare chemotherapeutic agents using appropriate precautions and current USP 800 guidelines
- Organize workload to accomplish all admixture tasks and meet established batch delivery times
- Perform primary check of labeling to ensure completeness according to established procedures
- Obtain pharmacist check prior to dispensing all IV admixtures
- Respond to special admixture requests including STAT, ASAP, and now medication orders
- Recycle IVs where possible and remove expired products from circulation
- Maintain IV area in a clean and orderly manner and restock prior to end of shift
- Communicate workload or operational issues to supervisors in a consistent and timely manner
- Prioritize and complete workload to promote smooth pharmacy operations
- Sustain high accuracy by consistently selecting, ordering, and restocking correct medications, dosages, and strengths
Hazardous and Chemotherapy Preparation
- Demonstrate competency in hazardous medication and chemotherapy compounding and USP 800 guidelines
- Properly handle and accurately prepare chemotherapeutic agents using appropriate precautions per established policies and procedures
- Demonstrate competence in the use of Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTD)
Medication Safety
- Proactively identify potential medication safety improvement opportunities such as look-alike, sound-alike medication storage and packaging issues, and delivery, storage, and security related issues
- Participate in the development of medication safety initiatives to prevent occurrence or reoccurrence of medication safety events
- Demonstrate awareness and adherence to medication safety communications and initiatives delivered by pharmacy management and the Safe Medication Practice team
- Participate in surveillance initiatives including Pyxis override report monitoring, controlled substance audits, and medication safety event reporting
Equipment Maintenance and Monitoring
- Monitor hood inspection dates and facilitate the inspection process
- Ensure laminar hood pre-filters are checked monthly and cleaned or replaced as appropriate
- Maintain documentation of pre-filter changes
- Maintain documentation in Manufacture Logs and Patient Picklists
- Participate in employee process validation and end product testing of admixed products
- Clean and document cleaning of horizontal laminar flow hood and Biological Safety Cabinet, and perform all tubing and IV solution changes, equipment setup, testing, and calibrations according to department procedures 100% of the time
- Monitor and document refrigerator and freezer temperature logs
- Remove outdated and unusable medications
- Maintain neat and organized work area at all times
- Maintain integrity of pharmacy waste streams
Purchasing
- Initiate ordering and receiving of controlled substances while assuring no discrepancies or deviations from practice standards
- Order enteral formula and bags, TPN electrolytes, solutions, and supplies
Sterile Product Quality Assurance
- Perform environment monitoring for sterile compounding quality assurance including air and surface testing
- Conduct process validation qualification for all staff
- Perform clean-down procedures daily, weekly, and monthly
- Conduct hazardous drug residue testing
- Monitor sterile product room quality assurance required tasks and work with staff to complete on time, reporting to leadership when overdue
- Supervise and confirm process validations including handwashing, garbing, gloved fingertip testing, various types of hood cleaning, PATT2, TPN and chemo validation, pull and file media kits certificate of analysis, and hazardous drug surface sampling
Communication and Teamwork

Delivery Coordination
- Pull medications and supplies, prioritize processing of orders, update inventory, and order drugs and supplies
- Determine priority for delivery and work with driver coordinator to ensure timely and efficient medication deliveries to various areas within the San Diego region
- Log and update delivery tickets as necessary
- Communicate with various disciplines and departments for timely arrangement of medication processing and delivery coordination
Schedule
- Shift: 8-hour day shift between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM with variable start and end times
- Weekend work required as needed
- On-call availability required
- Per diem employment
Compensation
- Hourly pay range: $30.98 - $38.73 - $43.37
- Actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other position requirements, and employer business practices
Required Qualifications
- One year of experience in a hospital pharmacy environment or equivalent intravenous sterile compounding experience
- California Pharmacy Technician License (TCH) from the California State Board of Pharmacy
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
