The opportunity

Job Description

Join Valley Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as a Pediatric Nurse Extern. This position offers clinical experience in Central California's only Regional Level IV NICU, the highest level of medical care available for premature and critically ill newborns. You will work with a team of more than 250 neonatal nurses providing specialized care for fragile babies, with patient ratios of 1:1 or 2:1 in the ICU and 1:3 in Intermediate Care.

Valley Children's Hospital NICU is ranked among the best children's hospitals in Neonatology by U.S. News & World Report. The NICU serves a network throughout Central California, including level II and level III satellite units in Fresno, Merced, and Hanford. The facility provides comprehensive care for conditions including extreme prematurity, congenital defects, injury, and chronic illnesses, with access to a full range of pediatric and surgical specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nursing activities documented as learned in your nursing program
  • Assist with medication administration upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's medication examination
  • Support family-centered care practices

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN program
  • Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
  • Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement

Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Orientation

  • Position type: Per Diem
  • Daily hours: 8
  • Varied shifts
  • Must be able to complete the full, weeklong new hire and clinical orientation, typically offered during school breaks in December or January

Compensation

  • $23.00 - $36.00 per hour
  • Final compensation dependent upon skills and experience
